It certainly looks like Selena Gomez doesn't listen to her mother and former manager Mandy Teefey on a number of things.
That includes Gomez' choice to rekindle her romance with Justin Bieber. But it also includes Gomez' choice to work with Woody Allen
Teefy said Tuesday in.a tweet that she had a long talk with her daughter, 25, about not working with Allen on his upcoming film "A Rainy Day in New York."
But Teefy said, "No one can make Selena do anything she doesn't want to do."
In the #MeToo era, the Academy Award-winning director is facing an unprecedented level of industry condemnation over 25-year-old allegations that he molested his daughter Dylan Farrow when she was 7 years old. A growing number of stars have begun to distance themselves from him.
Last week, Greta Gerwig said she would never work with him again and Mira Sorvino, who won a best supporting actress for Allen's "Mighty Aphrodite," publicly apologized to Farrow for not believing her and for praising Allen over the years.
Two of Gomez' co-stars in "A Rainy Day in New York" have expressed their concerns about the Farrow allegations, Page Six reported.
Timothée Chalamet announced Monday that he would donate his wages from the movie to RAINN and the legal defense fund for the new Time's Up anti-sexual harassment initiative. Rebecca Hall likewise announced this week that she would donate her salary from the movie.
So far, though, Gomez has remained silent on Allen. But the former Disney star's mother isn't keeping quiet. On Monday, Teefy responded to a fan on Twitter who suggested she should make Gomez apologize for starring in Allen's movie.
"I had a long talk with her about not working with him and it didn't click," Teefy said said. "Her team are amazing people. There is no fall person here. No one controls her. She makes all her own decisions. No matter how hard you try to advise. It falls on deaf ears."
When asked in November by Billboard magazine about working with Allen, Gomez said the experience of auditioning for his film and working on it "was a great experience for me."
But she side-stepped questions about Dylan Farrow's allegations and working with Allen in light of the #MeToo movement raising awareness about supporting victims of sexual assault.
"To be honest, I'm not sure how to answer — not because I'm trying to back away from it," she said. "[The Harvey Weinstein allegations] actually happened right after I had started [on the movie]. They popped up in the midst of it. And that's something, yes, I had to face and discuss. I stepped back and thought, 'Wow, the universe works in interesting ways.'"
Gomez has not yet responded to the comments by her mother, Page Six and The Blast reported.
Allen has long denied Dylan Farrow's allegations. Law enforcement investigated the allegations when they first arose in 1992. A prosecutor in Connecticut, where the assault allegedly occurred, said he had "probable cause" to prosecute, but declined to press charges in order to spare Farrow, now 32, the trauma of a trial, reports say.
One star who is definitely standing by Allen is Alec Baldwin, who worked with Allen on three films, including "Blue Jasmine."
Baldwin tweeted Tuesday: "Woody Allen was investigated forensically by two states (NY and CT) and no charges were filed," he said. "The renunciation of him and his work, no doubt, has some purpose. But it's unfair and sad to me. I worked w WA 3 times and it was one of the privileges of my career."
