Students, parents and the Shark community patiently waited outside the doors of the Simon Sanchez High School cafeteria May 3 to support the first-ever "Sharkchella."
With professional lighting, surround-sound systems and glamorous decorations, the Sharks transformed the school's crumbling cafeteria into a stage made for stars.
Lawrence Estrada, dance instructor and event organizer, said he collaborated with the school's Student Body Association and administrators to make the Guam Department of Education's first "songfest" a reality.
"Our school wanted to start fresh by doing something that none of the other public high schools have never done," Estrada said.
He wanted to celebrate not only student talent and creativity, but to also cultivate camaraderie between the different classes.
New tradition
Sharkchella challenged students to memorize song lyrics, choreograph eclectic performances and create original class chants, all within the span of a month.
Freshmen rocked to the bops of Michael Jackson, the "King of Pop." The sophomores grooved to the hip-swaying hits of Bruno Mars. The juniors bumped to the beats of Beyoncé. The graduating seniors jammed out to Justin Bieber.
As the crowd favorite class, the sophomores had the audience "stop and stare for a while" with a moving performance featuring hits from pop artist Bruno Mars.
More than just a simple performance, the class of 2020 presented the charming story of a young couple's relationship through dance, leading them to first place and the grand prize of $1,000.
As Simon Sanchez underclassmen eagerly await the next Sharkchella, it's bittersweet for the school's seniors to impart the tradition in their last year.
"We didn't really expect Sharkchella to turn out this great, but a lot of people came and the students really enjoyed it. It was really a success," senior Angelina Miralles said.
The graduating senior hopes the spirited event will be a treasured tradition for all Sharks to come.
