After controlling the Hot 100 for almost the entire year thus far, Drake has finally stepped aside on the all-genre singles ranking, pushed down by Childish Gambino's incoming "This Is America," which debuted at the peak. Now that he's no longer listed first (though he hasn't drifted very far), Drake's lengthy stay at the peak has come to an end...and it stands as one of the longest ever.
Drake ruled the Hot 100 for 15 consecutive weeks this year, which is the fifth-longest streak in the chart's decades-long history for any one name.
The longest unbroken stay at No. 1 belongs to the Black Eyed Peas, who once topped the Hot 100 for 26 weeks in a row back in 2009 when they were unbeatable. They first made it to No. 1 with "Boom Boom Pow," which ruled for a dozen frames, and they replaced themselves with "I Gotta Feeling," which held on for 14 consecutive turns.
The second-longest streak belongs to Usher, who controlled the Hot 100 for 19 frames with his smashes "Yeah!" with Lil Jon and Ludacris (12 weeks) and then "Burn" (7 weeks). Just behind him in third place is Justin Bieber, who just last year lived at No. 1 for 17 spins. He started off with his song "I'm the One," which only managed one turn at the top, but which was followed by 16-week champion "Despacito," which he was featured on.
When looking at runs that involved more than one song keeping an artist's name at No. 1, Drake comes in fourth place, but when taking into account only the number of weeks on the throne and not the actual number of singles an artist managed their successful stint with, two other tracks tie for fourth place. Both Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day" and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" owned the No. 1 spot for 16 weeks straight, which kept the artists in charge for just as long.
Drake sat atop the Hot 100 for 15 frames thanks to his songs "God's Plan" and then "Nice For What," both of which debuted at No. 1. The rapper is one of only a few names who have collected more than one No. 1 debut, and one of a few who have replaced themselves at the top.
