Drake, Ed Sheeran Help Sony/ATV Writers Spend a Full Year at No. 1 On the Hot 100

Sony/ATV Music Publishing has kicked off 2018 on the right foot, landing at No. 1 among the top 10 music publishers for the first quarter. But now, the world's largest music publisher has earned a new distinction: as Drake's "Nice For What" notches its fourth straight week atop the Hot 100, Sony/ATV's writers have remained at No. 1 on the chart for 52 weeks straight, or a full calendar year, dating back to last May.

"This is an incredible accomplishment by our worldwide A&R team," chairman/CEO Martin Bandier said in a statement. "At Sony/ATV we strive to be successful creatively on a global basis and the fruits of our labor are shown by the diversity of our songwriters who have been No. 1 on the Hot 100 over the past year."

The streak began in May 2017 when Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee's "Despacito," feat. Justin Bieber, climbed to the summit, where it remained for a record-tying 16 weeks straight. (Fonsi, Yankee and songwriter Erika Ender are all signed to Sony/ATV.) That was followed by Taylor Swift's "Look What You Made Me Do" (three weeks); Cardi B's "Bodak Yellow" (three weeks); Post Malone's "rockstar" feat. 21 Savage (eight weeks); Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" (six weeks); Camila Cabello's "Havana" feat. Young Thug (one week); Drake's "God's Plan" (11 weeks); and "Nice For What." The Sony/ATV writers for each song can be found at the bottom of this post.

In total, 19 Sony/ATV writers have been part of the eight-song streak, with Drake ("God's Plan," "Nice For What") and Louis Bell ("rockstar," "Havana") having co-written two of those songs during the period. Of the performers on those tracks, just four (Bieber, Post Malone, 21 Savage and Young Thug) are not Sony/ATV writers, with all but Malone featured artists.

For some perspective, for the top 100 radio songs Billboard tracks each quarter, there are an average of approximately 350 writer. In taking the top slot in the first quarter of 2018, Sony/ATV earned a share in 26.24 percent of those songs, besting its closest competitor Warner/Chappell Music's 19.68 percent and giving it the No. 1 ranking in 22 of the previous 23 quarters, a run that dates back more than five years.
