Publishing Briefs: Atlas Music Partners With Mushroom; Mothership Acquires 'Genie In a Bottle ...

Atlas Music has entered into an agreement with Mushroom Music Publishing to serve as its sub-publisher for Australia and New Zealand. The Atlas catalog, to be administered by Mushroom in those territories includes songs by Van Halen, Counting Crows, John Legend  and Toby Gad, among others.

"As publishing companies continue to be bought and sold, it's vital that the remaining independents unite to strengthen our position in what is a very competitive market place," Mushroom Music MD Ian James said in a statement on the new deal.

While the deal may be new, the relationship goes back as Atlas Music CEO Rich Stumpf had previously worked with Mushroom when he was heading up creative at Cherry Lane. "Reuniting with Ian and the Mushroom team is like a return to family," Stumpf said in a statement. "These guys know the work it takes to get things done."

Reservoir has promoted Rell Lafargue, adding the title president to his existing title of chief operating officer, a title he has held since 2008.

Since joining Reservoir in 2008 when the company was founded, Lafargue has established the company's infrastructure, implemented its administration system, put together the company's international network, and overseen every deal the company has done in the last decade.

"Rell's commitment to the company as well as to our people is unparalleled. His drive to succeed while operating fairly and decisively are managed with an exacting balance which makes us all work better as part of the team," Reservoir Founder and CEO Golnar Khosrowshahi said in a statement. "For me, he personifies the unwavering, consistent and reliable colleague with whom I share an interest in the pursuit of excellence in what we do, how we do it, and with whom."

Lafargue has been involved in the singings of such songwriters and artists as Nate "Danja" Hills, one of Reservoir's first high-profile writer-producers, to the roster, and in the last year alone oversaw the signings of writers including Ali Tamposi, Migos' Takeoff and Offset, Dave Bassett, Just Blaze, Jim Beanz, and Jamie Hartman; and the joint venture with Warren Oaks Felder and Big Live Management. He also  oversaw such catalog acquisitions as TVT Music Publishing, where he worked prior to joining Reservoir; Century Media's publishing catalog; and this year's deals for the catalogs of Leon Ware, Willie Mitchell and the Commodores, Walter Orange and Thomas McClary.

"It has been a remarkable year that caps off a decade of steady growth, exciting deals, milestones, and achievements," LaFargue said in a statement. "Reservoir is already home to some of the best talent in the business, both songwriters and staff, and we're only just getting started… I'm looking forward to the next ten years at Reservoir."

-- Mothership Music Publishing has acquired worldwide rights to Pam Sheyne's and Nigel Rush's AppleTreeSongs Ltd, which includes such songs as Christina Aquilera's "Genie In A Bottle," Jessica Simpson's "Irresistible," Lindsay Lohan's "Drama Queen (That Girl)," in the catalog.

Mothership is a partnership created by Epitaph founder Brett Gurewitz, Lionel Conway and Hein van der Ree (CK). As part of the deal, PEN Music Group will service as worldwide administration and provide promotional services.

"Pam Sheyne is one of the pre-eminent pop songwriters of our time," Conway said in a statement. "Genie in a Bottle" is such a classic copyright along with all of Pam's other hits, and we are thrilled that Pam has entrusted her catalog with an independent music publisher such as Mothership, as we pride ourselves on the care and attention we bring to all the songs in our catalog."

The acquisition does not include Sheyne's current songs, but as part of the deal, she will work closely with the Mothership and PEN teams to not only find new ways to generate income on the known hits but also discover and nurture the hidden gems in the catalog that have yet to be recorded or released, according to the announcement.

-- John Fogerty has paired with BMG to handle administration form New Songs Administration, the publishing company he formed with some copyrights held back from the sale of the catalog of his previous company, Minder Music. The New Songs Administration catalog includes copyrights from the Fall, the Gap Band, the Fatback Band and Jimmy Castor, as well as such songs as Ace's " How Long," Yarbrough & People's "Don't Stop The Music," and Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk" and the catalog of Aaron Schroeder, whose songs were recorded by Bobby Vee, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Duane Eddy, Nat King Cole, and Perry Como.

"Since concluding the deal for BMG to acquire Minder, it has been a real pleasure working with the UK team," Fogerty said in a statement. "For my NSA copyrights I wanted to be with a real publisher rather than a data processor -- they are not the same thing -- and I am pleased to sign with BMG, freeing up my time to acquire more copyrights."

-- Sony/ATV Music Publishing has extended its worldwide publishing deal with songwriter, artist and producer Jamie Scott.

In addition to covering Scott's entire song catalog, including Major Lazer's "Cold Water" featuring Justin Bieber and MØ as well as songs recorded by such artists as One Direction, Niall Horan, and Enrique Iglesias, the extended deal covers future works.

"Jamie Scott is a true melodic genius and a songwriter who develops hits constantly with a real understanding of the artist," said Sony/ATV UK MD and president of worldwide creative Guy Moot. "He has a unique perspective of what it means to be a new artist, with a compassion for and an understanding of where they come from."

-- Pulse Music Publishing has extended its relationship with Music Asset Management serving as the global administrator of its publishing catalog. In 2014, Pulse formed Pulse Publishing Administration as a joint venture with Music Asset Management to administer and manage the Pulse Music Publishing Catalog. Pulse Music Publishing was created with its financial partner FujiPacific Music (West).

As part of the relationship, Music Management oversees Pulse's 150 song catalogs, including its joint venture catalogs with partners like Luke and Beth Laird's Creative Nation and Rick Rubin's American Songs; and Marc Anthony's Magnus Media and Mass Appeal.

The Pulse roster includes Marty James, a co-songwriter on "Despacito [Remix]" by Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee ft. Justin Bieber; Rob Mandell, a co-writer on "Bad and Boujee" by Migos ft. Lil Uzi Vert; Ruth Anne Cunningham, a co-writer on Niall Horan's "Slow Hands"; Tyler Johnson, who co-wrote Harry Styles' "Sign of the Times"; and Starrah, a co-writer on such songs as "Havana" by Camila Cabello ft. "In only three years Pulse Publishing Administration  has firmly distinguished itself as the "go-to" company that maximizes value for rights owners, and provides a high level of services, expertise and personal attention that delivers results," Pulse Music Group co-CEO Scott Cutler said in a statement. "We're…pleased to extend our relationship with Mary Jo Mennella and Music Asset Management."

Mennella is founder and CEO of Music Asset Management Inc., which oversees key international partners such as Native Tongue Music (Australia), peermusic (Latin America), Casablanca Media (Canada), Geoff Paynter (South Africa), and Fujipacific Music (Asia); as well as directing Pan European digital licensing agreements through IMPEL supported by CTM Publishing.

While it doesn't reveal details, Pulse Publishing Administration, which was founded in 2014, claims its revenue tripled in 2017 over 2016's total, after doubling growth in each year of 2016 and 2015 over the prior year. It says in addition to its songwriters penchant for writing hits and its international expansion -- under Music Asset Management's guidance overseeing global strategic planning -- Pulse's growth is also fueled by its creative and synch teams.

"We're thrilled to continue working with the incredibly creative and visionary team at Pulse Music Group, and look forward to an exciting next chapter for this dynamic company," Mennella said in a statement.
