Will Lorde make Grammy history as 2nd youngest Album of the Year winner?

Lorde made history in 2014 when she won Song of the Year for her breakthrough hit "Royals" at the age of 17. Not only was she the youngest winner in that category's history, she was also one of the youngest artists ever to win a Grammy in any category. She ranks sixth to be exact, after the three Peasall sisters who contributed to the "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" soundtrack at ages 7, 9, and 13, and LeAnn Rimes and Luis Miguel, who were both Grammy winners at age 14. This year Lorde could come close to another record. If she wins Album of the Year for her sophomore effort "Melodrama" she'll be the second youngest winner in that category's history.

The current record-holder as the youngest Album of the Year champ as a lead album artist is Taylor Swift, who won in 2010 for "Fearless" at age 20 — the Peasall sisters were featured artists on "O Brother." Swift broke a record that had been held for 14 years by Alanis Morrissette, who won in 1996 for "Jagged Little Pill" at age 21. And before that the record had been held for a whopping 32 years by Barbra Streisand, who won for "The Barbra Streisand Album" in 1964 at age 22. Several other artists have prevailed at a young age, with Lauryn Hill, Adele, Stevie Wonder, and Norah Jones all claiming the prize when they were 23.

Lorde can't claim the record outright since she turns 21 in November, but by the time the Grammys roll around next January 28 she'll still be younger than Morissette was when she won, so a victory would place Lorde second on the all-time list. And it might just be possible since "Melodrama" is one of the most acclaimed albums of the year, ranked third on MetaCritic with a score of 91. However, "Melodrama" hasn't sold as well as her debut album, "Pure Heroine," and it hasn't produced a hit as big as "Royals," and the academy tends to gravitate towards the biggest hits. Consider last year's Album of the Year nominees "Purpose" by Justin Bieber and "Views" by Drake, both of which had mixed reviews but massive sales.
