Hot 100 Chart Moves: Halsey Hits Top 40 & Charlie Puth Debuts

Plus, Maren Morris debuts with charity song "Dear Hate."

As previously reported, Post Malone's "Rockstar," featuring 21 Savage, hits No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (dated Oct. 28), marking the first leader for each artist. Plus, Portugal. The Man's "Feel It Still" reaches Hot 100's top five and takes over atop the Radio Songs chart, while Sam Smith returns to the Hot 100's top 10 with "Too Good at Goodbyes."

Plus, Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda debuts at No. 20 on the Hot 100 and No. 1 on the Digital Song Sales chart with his new charity single "Almost Like Praying," featuring Artists for Puerto Rico. "I'm filled with gratitude," Miranda told Billboard of the song's success. "The generosity of the American people sends a clear message to our fellow citizens and the 78 municipalities of Puerto Rico: We have not forgotten about you, we will never forget you and we will continue to be here for you."

"Bad at Love," Halsey
The song hits the Hot 100's top 40, bounding 49-40 with across-the-board-gains. It lifts 27-25 on the Digital Song Sales chart with 21,000 downloads sold, up 20 percent, according to Nielsen Music, and debuts at No. 47 on Streaming Songs (11.8 million U.S. streams, up 15 percent) and No. 49 on Radio Songs (26 million in airplay audience, up 10 percent). Boosting the song's profile is its synch in a Jeep commercial.

Halsey earns her fourth top 40 Hot 100 hit, following her featured turns on Justin Bieber's "The Feeling" (No. 31, 2015) and The Chainsmokers' "Closer" (No. 1 for 12 weeks, 2016) and her own "Now or Never" (No. 17 in July), the lead single before "Bad at Love" from her first No. 1 Billboard 200 album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom.

"Closer," meanwhile, is the top title from the current decade on Billboard's recap of the Pop Songs airplay chart's first 25 years. It ranks No. 9 overall. What's No. 1? Click here.

"How Long," Charlie Puth
Puth achieves his highest Hot 100 debut (among seven entries), as "How Long" starts at No. 60. It launches at No. 22 on Digital Song Sales with 23,000 sold, while debuting at No. 34 on Pop Songs. Prior hit "Attention" crowned Pop Songs for four weeks and became his highest-charting hit on the Hot 100 (No. 5).

Plus, as keen chart-watcher Pablo Nelson notes: "Once again, Puth has a Hot 100 hit that features the same title as, but is a different tune than, a '70s Hot 100 hit. Last year, he peaked at No. 9 with 'We Don't Talk Anymore,' featuring Selena Gomez. British pop titan Cliff Richard carried a different song with the same title to No. 7 in 1979. 'How Long' became the biggest hit for the British group Ace, peaking at No. 3 in 1975. Puth's 'How Long' even brings back the full 'how long has this been going on?' lyric from Ace's classic."

Meanwhile … Puth's first Hot 100 hit didn't borrow a title from the '70s, but the name of an artist, an R&B icon who ruled the decade: "Marvin Gaye."

"Dear Hate," Maren Morris feat. Vince Gill
Released in response to the Oct. 2 shooting massacre at the Route 91 Harvest festival in Las Vegas (Morris performed at the festival on Sept. 30), the single enters the Hot 100 at No. 91. It ranks at No. 15 on Digital Song Sales (27,000 sold), while drawing 1.7 million U.S. streams.

All proceeds from the song will go to Nashville's Music City Cares Fund to support victims. "Hate is everywhere, and I'm sick of not doing enough," Morris said in a statement.
