Drawing the line between good tattoos and permanent disasters

AFTER pop star Justin Bieber revealed a new tattoo that leaves his chest and stomach almost completely covered, his fans reacted with shock — many taking to social media to tell the 23-year-old that he's gone too far.

Bieber is the latest in a long line of celebs and sports stars to cross the ink-line from sexy to not-sexy. But where exactly is the line when it comes to tattoos?

Fashion stylist Donny Galella says the problem comes when people jump into getting tattoos and "it happens too fast, too soon".

"Like with Bieber," Mr Galella says, "I think that's just gone way too quickly and we've gone into shock mode. Overnight he's gone from hot to not. So I think that's when it goes wrong.

"When you basically don't see the skin and you just see tattoos, that's when you cross a line and it gets a bit too much. [Bieber] could have like 60 small tatts over his body, but because it's such a large mass and it's basically all tatt and no skin, I think that's where it's gone to bad territory."

If you're thinking about making a visit to the tattoo parlour, Mr Galella suggests putting some time and thought into what you're getting before the needle comes out.

"Really, really, really think before you get a tattoo," he advises. He says there are a couple of apps that can help you get an idea of what a tattoo will look like before you get it done.

"You take a photo of you and mock up what the tattoo would look like on your body, and you can think 'Do I really want to get that tattoo there? Do I like the shape of it? Is it too small? Too big?'

"[Tattoos] are pretty much for life, even though there is laser removal, but that's still in its infancy. It's not like a haircut where your hair will grow back."

Justin Bieber

Bieber, 23, got his first tattoo — a small bird on his left hip — when he was 16. Over the years, he has added to his collection, amassing another 61 tattoos over his body. His latest, a whole torso tattoo of a church, has his fans expressing their disapproval: "It looks like someone spilled ink on his chest," wrote one; "Justin Bieber's torso just looks like a mess now," wrote another.

Ed Sheeran

Like Bieber, singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran has amassed some 60 odd tattoos all over his body, but said he will never get them on his neck or face. "You will never see them in a suit," he told The Sun in March. "I want to get married and look great." Fans were outraged by a lion tattoo the singer had done on his chest in celebration of his sold out tour at London's Wembley Stadium in 2015.

Angelina Jolie

Hollywood actor Angelina Jolie has long been a fan of body art with about 20 tattoos — including several across her upper back and a large Bengal tiger on her lower back. She has admitted to making a few bad decisions when it comes to tattoo choice and has had a number of them removed, including a large dragon with the name of her second husband Billy Bob Thornton. She has vowed that she'll never get a man's name tattooed on her again.

Harry Styles

When Styles first made it big in 2010 as a member of boy band One Direction he was a bare skinned teenager, but that all changed in 2012 when he got a tattoo of a star on his left arm to celebrate his 20th birthday. To date, Styles now has over 50 tatts, including a large butterfly on his chiselled torso. So far his fans haven't complained though!

Rihanna

The singer and actor, who got her first tattoo around 2006 with a small treble clef and music note on her foot, now has more than 20. Rihanna has admitted she has a thing for tattoos, once saying, "I like hanging out in tattoo shops. I am so intrigued by tattoos."

One of her more controversial tattoos is that of a small gun on her side that she got after being beaten by then-boyfriend Chris Brown. The tattoo is supposed to represent strength and power rather than violence. She also got the Egyptian goddess Isis tattooed under her breasts in memory of her grandmother.

David Beckham

Soccer legend David Beckham, 41, has around 40 inkings over his fit body, including a large guardian angel across his back and shoulders, the names of his four children, and the picture of his wife, Victoria Beckham. He got his first tattoo after the birth of his first son, Brooklyn, in 1999. Most recently, he added an inking to his shin by tattoo artist Mark Mahoney.

Miley Cyrus

The former Disney star ditched her good-girl image and replaced it with twerking and an ever-growing tattoo collection. Among them are a bunch of small inkings including a moon, cat, planet, anchor and avocado. She also has a few phrases and words, like "just breathe", "love never dies" and "om", scattered over her body. She even has a sad kitty emoji on her inner lip. Her largest tatts are a dreamcatcher on her ribcage and her grandmother's face on her inner forearm.

Adam Levine

It's no secret the Maroon 5 singer is a fan of permanent body ink, but he took his tatt collection to a whole new level when he revealed an artwork that covered his whole back in February last year. In an Instagram post, he shared his latest inking with the caption "6 months in the making". He also has the word "California" written across his abs in a giant font.

Reni Maitua

Former NRL player Reni Maitua has warned others about getting tattoos as it may limit career options in the future. In an interview with the Daily Telegraphin January Maitua said that his tattoos had cost him several jobs after his 12-year rugby career. He said: "I don't have anything against tattoos, but they have created dramas for me. I find it embarrassing when people look at my neck tattoo. I think they are thinking that I am a thug and that is not me as a person. I don't want people presuming I am a criminal."

Ruby Rose

Aussie model, DJ and Orange is the New Black actor Ruby Rose has some 60 tattoos — covering everything from her fingers to her lips. In fact, she has so many she lost track of the number a long time ago. Her first tattoo was a rose, which she had done when she was a teenager. "It's such a 16-year-old's tattoo," she told Inked magazine in 2010. "I would never get that now. But I would never get it removed either." In 2013, fans were not impressed when she revealed a large tattoo of a crown on her chest (a copy of a piece by dead artist Jean-Michel Basquait). "Ugly as hell," one fan commented at the time.
