Ranking the top artists of the summer

As summer 2017 slowly comes to a close, it leaves us with tan lines and memories from the past four months.

Many of these memories are tied to popular songs released throughout the past summer.

Here are a few artists that made a splash in the pool of summer vacation.

Justin Bieber

Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's song "Despacito" featuring Justin Bieber has overtaken the music airways this summer.

The track has garnered an enormous amount of success including claiming the title of the second song in history to remain on the Billboard's Hot 100 Chart for more than 15 consecutive weeks.

On Aug. 22, MTV announced the "Despacito" Remix had earned a spot in the 'Song of Summer' Video Music Award category.

Bieber also was a part of another huge hit of the summer, "I'm The One" by DJ Khaled featuring Quavo, Chance The Rapper and Lil Wayne.

Currently the song has spent 16 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart with the peak position at the number one spot.

Ending his summer of success, Bieber recently released a single titled, "Friends" with BloodPop on Aug. 18 — which is predicted to continue to climb the charts.

Even though "It Ain't Me" by Kygo & Selena Gomez was released in February, the success of the track flowed into the summer and continually landed on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart for a total of 27 weeks as of late August.

"I love listening to Selena Gomez because her music is so catchy," said Emily Scott (freshman-biology). "It always reminds me of memories I have with my friends from the summer."

Gomez continued her reign releasing not one but two tracks off of her upcoming album.

Her first single, "Bad Liar" debuted on May 18 and was followed later by "Fetish" featuring Gucci Mane in mid-July.

While Selena is known for releasing catchy tracks, the controversial-style music videos and newer sound have added to the buzz of "Bad Liar" and "Fetish" during their time on the charts this summer.

DJ Khaled produced one of the top songs of the summer with "I'm The One" which also features top artists including Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper and Lil Wayne.

Khaled was also nominated for multiple MTV VMA's for his song, "Wild Thoughts" featuring Rihanna and Bryson Tiller, including "Song of Summer," "Best Collaboration," "Best Direction" and "Video of the Year."

The song currently occupies the second spot on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and has spent nine weeks on the list.

The contemporary R&B blend with a hip-hop sound gives the track a catchy and upbeat mix which proved popular with their fans.

The Weeknd, who is up for MTV VMA's 'Artist of the Year' and 'Video of the Year,' has had a stellar year so far including the summer of 2017.

"Reminder" a song off of his latest album, "Starboy," has spent 15 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart.

The chill and upbeat track captured The Weeknd's audience as a fan favorite and has continued to climb the charts.

"The Weeknd was clearly a top artist this summer," said Irene Fishman (sophomore-kinesiology). "I think tons of Penn State students were super excited when it was announced that he was performing at the Bryce Jordan Center."

The Weeknd is set to kick off the second leg of his "Starboy World Tour" at 7:30 p.m on Sept. 6 at the BJC.

Quavo

Summer 2017 was filled with tons of new music but with every new song released, a common artist seemed to be a part of all of them — Quavo.

Quavo was featured in numerous hits with top artists including collaborations with Liam Payne in "Strip That Down," Post Malone in "Congratulations," Camila Cabello in "OMG" and several others.

"Personally my favorite artist is Quavo because he has become a part of every hit song this past summer," said Casey DeCarlo (sophomore-liberal arts).

Quavo not only has become the star of the hit group, Migos, he has also made an independent name for himself, scoring multiple MTV VMA nominations — including two out of six spots for the 'Best Hip Hop' category with DJ Khaled with "I'm The One" and another nomination for Migos "Bad & Boujee" featuring Lil Uzi Vert.

Quavo constantly was on the Billboard Top 100 Chart with multiple songs making him my choice for the top artist of summer 2017.

HONORABLE MENTIONS

Honorable Mention: Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran's most recent album, "Divide," debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart and Sheeran had enormous success with his songs, "Castle on the Hill" and "Shape of You."

Both tracks have spent 32 weeks on the Billboard Top 100 Chart since they were released but Sheeran narrowly missed this list due other hotter tracks overshadowing his popular tunes this summer.

Honorable Mention: Kendrick Lamar

Kendrick Lamar's "HUMBLE." has spent 20 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 with its peak position at the number one spot.

Both his songs "LOYALTY." featuring Rihanna (topping at No. 14) and "DNA." (topping at No. 4) have spent 18 weeks on the chart.

His success has garnered multiple MTV VMA nominations including "Artist of the Year", "Video of the Year" and "Best Hip Hop."

Lamar also narrowly missed our main list due to "DAMN." being released in early April and slightly fading into the background over the course of the summer.

Honorable Mention: Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato scored a major hit and a "Song of Summer" VMA nomination with her new single, "Sorry Not Sorry," which currently holds the 25 spot on the Billboard Top 100 Chart.

Lovato's other collaborations include features on Cheat Codes, "No Promises," and Jax Jones' spicy single, "Instruction," featuring Stefflon Don.

While Lovato has garnered a lot of attention with nominations, her songs have not fared as well in the charts as other top artists, causing her to just miss the to
