18-year old Swedish pop star Felix Sandman has used his celebrity to raise awareness of the most common form of cancer among young men – the testicular kind.
This spring, he partnered up with Ung Cancer, a non-profit that supports young adults with cancer, in a campaign called Kolla Bollarna, or 'check your balls' in Swedish.
"There's too little discussion about testicular cancer. I really wish that all young people understand the importance to check your testicles regularly", Sandman says.
"Even though testicle cancer is the most common form of cancer among young adults, there's surprisingly few people who know that you can check your testicles yourself, and what you need to look out for," said Camilla Tuneberg, Secretary General at Ung Cancer.
Already in 2013, Sandman and his group FO&O warmed up for Justin Bieber, when the Canadian pop icon visited Globen in Stockholm.
Sandman, with more than 200,000 Instagram-followers launched the campaign in April, by posting a photo of himself sitting in a locker room - flashing one of his testicles from beneath his underwear. Sandman added no comments to the picture.
Or so people thought. Later, it was revealed that it was a 'fake testicle'. Regardless, the campaign has since spread like wildfire.
More than 80,000 'testicle checks' have been made on the campaign website kollabollarna.nu, which provides a check-list for the procedure, as well as basic information about where to get treatment if lumps are detected, or if one testicle is considerably bigger than the other one.
The campaign was recognized as Sweden's best ad campaign in the month of May by leading ad & PR industry publication Resumé.
Ung Cancer partnered up with PR firm Cohn & Wolf to create the campaign, which was aimed particularly towards younger age groups.
"We realized early one that testicles are sensitive subject, and instead of trying to be discrete about we wanted to go all-in with the campaign," said Axel Bringel, PR-consultant at Cohn & Wolfe to Resumé.
Bringel notes that there was a considerable risk to launch the campaign through Sandman's Instagram, as the image could have been removed for explicit content.
"We had to show just enough skin, and take the picture in a natural context, so that it looked like a natural mistake," he explained.
