Photos: American Music Awards The 44th Annual American Music Awards is taking place Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and Drake is carrying a leading — and record-setting — 12 nominations into tonight's presentation, while Rihanna has seven nods and Justin Bieber has five.
Adele and The Chainsmokers each have four nominations, while Beyonce, Bryson Tiller, Carrie Underwood and Fetty Wap each have three.
Drake originally earned 13 nominations, but early voting eliminated him as a contender for Artist of the Year. The five remaining contenders for that prize are Bieber, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Underwood.
Drake's 13 original nominations marked the largest number since Michael Jackson got 11 in 1984.
Supermodel Gigi Hadid and comedian Jay Pharoah are hosting the ceremony, which will include performances from artists such as Fifth Harmony, Lady Gaga, Green Day, Bruno Mars, Grande, Nicki Minaj, Maroon 5 and Kendrick Lamar.
During the show, Sting will receive The American Music Award of Merit.
The ceremony will be televised on ABC beginning at 6:30 p.m. local time.
