The Sunday Scaries were all too real for #Jelena fans yesterday, as an apparent feud broke out between former teen lovebirds/the Britney and Justin of our time, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. For your convenience in catching up with this pressing matter of international concern, a guide:
First, Bieber, 22, Instagrammed five (five!) black-and-white photos of himself and his reported new girlfriend, 17-year-old model Sofia Richie.
This is the new PDA, guys. In the days prior, the pair had been photographed hand in hand around Tokyo, with Richie sporting Baby Spice double buns. Note: Richie is the daughter of Lionel and half-sister of Nicole, and a junior member of the Instagirls squad (she has 'grammed her love of fellow model Bella Hadid).
Then, Bieber's Instagram was deluged with pro-Selena, anti-Sofia rhetoric.
#TeamSelena was a common comment; #RIPBeliebers began trending on Twitter. Other comments included: "Your stupid miner [sic] girlfriend just wants you for your money she's only 17 and she still going to use you" and references to Richie's resemblance to Gomez, à la, "She is Selena." For newcomers to this fiasco, understand that #Jelena fans find few greater injustices in this world than Bieber and Gomez being apart.
Next, Bieber issued a warning to his followers.
"I'm gonna make my Instagram private if you guys don't stop the hate this is getting out of hand," he wrote on a sixth photo of himself and Richie. (By this point, they were becoming an exhibit-worthy series). "If you guys are really fans you wouldn't be so mean to people that I like."
In a shocking twist, Gomez herself apparently weighed in to shame Bieber for shaming his fans.
That is, if it was really Gomez and not some sort of Gomez bot. She wrote: "If you can't handle the hate, stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol-it should be special between you two only. Don't be mad at your fans. They love you and supported you before anyone ever did." Ah, the emphasis of a well-placed "lol." Cue: #SelenaEndedJustinParty trending on Twitter.
Finally, Justin responded by throwing shade back at Gomez.
"It's funny to see people that used me for attention and still try to point the finger this way. Sad. All love," he wrote. In another comment, he added, "I'm not one for anyone receiving hate. Hope you all can be kind to my friends and each other. And yes, I love my Beliebers."
Thing we all just learned: Bieber feels Gomez "used him for attention." How will the #Jelena faithful sleep tonight?
