An boy from Eatonia, Sask., is one step closer to reaching his dream of becoming a professional dancer.
Kylan Wagner, 11, won an online audition to dance onstage with Justin Bieber, during the pop star's concert tonight in Saskatoon.
It started when his mother, a dance teacher, heard about the competition from a friend.
"She just dropped me off at the studio and she's like, hey do you want to learn this?" Wagner told CBC News. "I was like 'yeah sure.'"
Learned routine in 20 minutes
It took Wagner roughly 20 minutes to pick up the hip-hop moves. His mother then recorded him, and submitted the audition to YouTube.
"He learns choreography extremely fast," said his mother, Tiffany Brown-Wagner.
She added they attend numerous dance conventions each year, where students who learn the moves quickest win scholarships and money.
"He's lived at the studio since he was a baby," Brown-Wagner laughed. "I've never pushed him to do anything. He always just wants more."
Wagner will study at the National Ballet School in Toronto this summer, after he competes in a national dance event in Orlando, Fla. He's raising money to attend the World Tap Dancing Championships later this fall, in Germany.
The young dancer said he's nervous about the show, but described himself as a big fan of Justin Bieber, and he's looking forward to meeting the singer backstage.
"I was shocked," Wagner said. "I mean I was a little bit nervous. But I was also like, 'oh my gosh, look at this big opportunity.'"
Wagner will share the stage with a young dancer from Calgary, Alta., whose audition also won her a spot dancing during Bieber's tour. Both will perform alongside the pop star during the song "Children" at tonight's show at SaskTel Centre.
Eatonia is about 244 kilometres southwest of Saskatoon.
