Earlier this month, Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" broke yet another record, with the music video amassing 5 billion views on YouTube, making it the most-watched video worldwide. During Billboard Latin Music Week 2018, the video's director Carlos Perez chatted about the success of the video and working with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.
"I try to be very selective with the projects we get involved with as a company, and as a director," he says. "In this case [of 'Despacito'] I think what's still shocking is the reach. Beyond views and chart positions, it's really been the first video that has had some direct cultural impact of the island I'm from [La Perla]."
Perez says that one of the biggest challenges he faced when beginning the video for "Despacito" was how to make a video that is "credible for Fonsi, that embraces the urban world that Yankee comes from, and at the same time, shares different points of the culture seamlessly among those elements."
Perez also discusses Justin Bieber's contribution to the song, saying: "Everyone talks about the impact of Justin Bieber. Obviously he had a huge part of the song…it's like when there's fire, and you throw gasoline to the fire, that fire becomes broader. Justin Bieber came in and threw a flame to a fire that was already uncontrollable."
"The music video is with the original song in Spanish," he continues. "So to me, culturally, we analyze where we're at as a culture, especially now in the United States, it's really awesome to see that people have embraced the culture globally…We reached the globe in Spanish. That, to me, is something that I can share with my kid when he gets older. And he can feel proud."
