Canberra's most Googled term in 2017 was Deliveroo

When it came to internet searches in 2017 many Canberrans were  seeking with their stomachs.

With the arrival of food-delivery services Deliveroo and UberEats to the capital this year, it's no surprise both ended up on the list of most Googled terms in Canberra in the past 12 months.

According to Google Trends, Deliveroo topped the list of terms  with the biggest increase in searches in the ACT this year, up 1200 per cent.

It was closely followed by this year's Melbourne Cup, with the race that stops the nation also coming in at 1200 per cent.

UberEats came in third at 650 per cent, with payment service Afterpay and website 123movies rounding out the top five with an increase of 400 and 200 per cent respectively.

When it came to rising search topics, virtual currency Bitcoin - with its value having a meteoric rise and fall during 2017 - came out on top with a 600 per cent increase in searches this year.

The search term "season", which refers to seasons of different TV shows, came in second for search topics at 50 per cent, followed by Amazon, which  launched in Australia this year.

Google Trends also measured the most popular topics in terms of the number of online searches during the past 12 months.

It appears that Canberrans like to Google themselves a lot, with "Canberra" being the most popular topic, followed by "Australia", and "the ACT".

Google itself was the fourth most Googled term in Canberra, closely followed by "weather".

Rounding out the top 10 was "how to", "Facebook", "YouTube", "Sydney" and "film".

In a year  when there were countless questions raised about the citizenship of federal politicians, it's no surprise one of them topped the list for the largest increase in news-related searches.

"Xenophon" was top of the list for 2017, closely followed by the gaming console Nintendo Switch.

"The Queen" also made the list at number three, with fellow Brit Andy Murray in fourth and pop star Justin Bieber in fifth, who had a 4800 per cent increase in the number of internet searches this year.

The top 10 news searches were rounded out by the NDIS, North Korea, The Canberra Times, Russia and the NBA.

Nationwide, the 2017 Australian Open was the most searched for item on Google this year, with fellow sporting events the Melbourne Cup and Wimbledon taking second and third place respectively.

Cyclone Debbie, which hit Queensland in March was the most searched for news story, while disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein was the most Googled person in Australia for the year.
