CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Righthander Shane Bieber, scheduled to make his home debut Friday for the Lynchburg Hillcats, has three quality starts in his three games since being called up from low A Lake County Captains.
Bieber is 0-0 with a 1.93 ERA with the Hillcats, after going 2-3 with a 3.10 ERA in Lake County. He has 45 strikeouts in 47.2 innings this season against just one walk. He has struck out 66 batters in his professional career while only walking three.
Bieber does not have an overpowering fastball (89-93 mph), but obviously possess great command.
The Cleveland Indians selected Bieber in the fourth round of the 2016 draft out of UC-Santa Barbara, where he guided his team to the quarterfinals of the College World Series. He's the third-winningest pitcher in UCSB history with 23 wins and he's ranked second in career strikeouts (224).
Also of note, Bieber is not related to singer Justin Bieber. At Santa Barbara, opposing teams would play Justin Bieber songs whenever Shane took the mound.
"I kind of have to deal with it and learn to love it," said Bieber to Baseball America.
Rolling along: The Hillcats are 8-2 in their past 10 games to improve to 25-20. Lynchburg looked to complete another winning road trip with a rubber match against Wilmington on Thursday but the game was rained out.
Willi Castro is currently on a team-best 11-game hitting streak and is 19-for-44 (.432) with four doubles, a home run, eight RBIs and nine runs during his streak. The previous best hitting streak was eight games, accomplished by Andrew Calica, Jodd Carter and Ka'ai Tom.
The sweet spot: The Hillcats are 14-7 away from City Stadium and have outscored opponents 100-73 (4.8-3.5) and they own a 3-2 record on getaway days. When the Hillcats hit a home run, they own a record of 14-2. Despite a winning record in series finales, the Hillcats are 1-4 in rubber matches.
