Justin Bieber Attains Mustachioed Zen in the “No Brainer” Video

In April 2017, DJ Khaled released "I'm the One," a single featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo (one-third of Migos), Chance the Rapper, and Lil Wayne, that ended up becoming one of last summer's most played songs (it was perhaps only eclipsed on the Song of the Summer leaderboard by a different entry featuring Bieber, Luis Fonsi's "Despacito"). The video—which has by now accumulated over a billion views—features a very different Bieber than the one we have seen this past summer, of 2018, the Bieber that has been touring the country with new fiancée Hailey Baldwin, the Bieber who wears hotel slippers on the street, the Bieber whose dirty-blond hair is reaching Nick Nolte-mugshot levels of unruliness.

No, the Bieber of the "I'm the One" video is fairly clean-cut. Within the video's first minute, the pop star is seen in the following getups: shirtless, in swim trunks, with a red bandanna around his buzz cut; sporting a black Supreme jersey and black skinny jeans; and wearing a confusing reversible Amiri bomber jacket (available on the Barneys' Web site for $2,750). Bieber parades around the mansion at which the video was filmed, hands in the air, mouthing, "I'm the one!" And he is the one! He points to the camera a bunch. He crouches. He semi-dabs. When he sings the word "ride," he mimics driving a car. He looks at his watch when crooning the word "time." Pretty standard fare for a Justin Bieber in a DJ Khaled video scenario; there's a little bit of posturing, but Bieber mostly comes off as, well, a decently cool famous person.

Today, Khaled released "No Brainer," a likable single featuring, again, Bieber, Chance, and Quavo (no Wayne this time around), presumably in hopes of mimicking last summer's success. As with any sequel, it's hard not to feel a bit like this is a retread, if an inoffensive one. (The fact that it's called "No Brainer" also feels like it's offered to us with a bit of a wink—why wouldn't we release another one of these sonic slam dunks into the Spotify and Apple Music streaming assembly lines?!) It's notable though that this Bieber, while equally invested (he dances and shimmies and mugs for the camera), is wearing, for the majority of the video, a simple black T-shirt, drawstring black sweatpants, and a blue cap. He has a prominent mustache and a mullet. His shoes are checker-printed slip-ons (worn with colorful socks).

On some level, Bieber is "on trend" with his "No Brainer" aesthetic, as well as with his streetwear looks this summer. Pete Davidson, Jonah Hill, and others have similarly received accolades and Instagram double-taps for their "scumbro 'fits." But Bieber seems to be trying even less hard than those guys. Whereas it seems clear that Davidson and Hill are extremely knowledgable and well-studied about what they're choosing to wear, for Bieber, well, it just seems like he wants to be comfortable? Correspondingly, his physicality and demeanor come off as more at ease and unmannered in this video, too, don't they? You could easily imagine this Summer 2018 Bieber watching the "I'm the One" video and wincing, finding his "look" from a year ago corny. (This, of course, is the way most of us would react to footage of ourselves from our pasts, too.) Perhaps, gallivanting with Baldwin, wearing sweats and basketball shorts, hopping on songs with his friends when he feels like it, represents a kind of Optimal Bieber. Has our Justin Bieber, after all sorts of trials, tribulations, ups and downs, figured it all out? This summer, at least, he seems to be embodying a "No Brainer" lifestyle that perhaps we all can try to learn from, a lifestyle where one tries, as best one can, to not think about anything too hard and just go with the obvious choice.

Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston, 2016

This was the summer of Hiddleswift, the "I Heart T.S." T-shirt, and that pile of stones in Rhode Island. This pair was first seen smooching in Rhode Island in mid-June 2016, and by Labor Day they had called it quits. This brief but wondrous tryst, to anyone planning for the future, should be the model for Summer Romance 101.

Blake Lively is now the mother of two and happily married to Ryan Reynolds, but once upon a fleeting summer she dated Mr. Environment himself. The spark began at the Cannes Film Festival seven years ago and reportedly went out by early October of that year. Lively even visited DiCaprio in Australia on location over the summer, but by early fall was reportedly seeing Reynolds, whom she married the next year.

Ford and Fisher were a known item on screen for years, but not until Fisher was promoting her final memoir, The Princess Diarist, did she share that she and Ford had an affair during the filming of Star Wars: A New Hope. "It was Han and Leia during the week, and Carrie and Harrison during the weekend," she told People. In 2018, Todd Fisher revealed that his sister had regretted speaking out about the affair, which only lasted three months.

Drake would very much like us to keep guessing if these two will ever be a thing again, while Rihanna is quite adamant that they are neither friends nor foes. But according to some timelines, the pair were an item from June to October 2016, despite that awkward kiss onstage at the V.M.A.s in August of that year. During this small period of time, they were quite cozy on social media (things have changed since then) and reportedly got matching tattoos.

Ah, another Swift summer romance. In 2012, Swift dated Kennedy, the son of Robert Kennedy Jr., for the summer. They were first seen together in the Westchester area of New York in July of that summer, and were later seen hanging out with the Kennedys in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. At the time, Kennedy was only 18 and Swift was 22. She liked the summer romance so much, apparently, that she repeated it a few years later with Hiddleston.

After a whirlwind spring dating French singer-songwriter Soko, Stewart revealed that she had begun dating visual-effects producer Cargile, with whom she'd had an off-again-on-again relationship in the past. "I think also right now I'm just really in love with my girlfriend," she told Elle U.K. then. "We've broken up a couple of times and gotten back together, and this time I was like, 'Finally, I can feel again,'" she gushed. Things reportedly quietly ended early that fall.

The exact timeline of this one isn't clear, but an on-set hookup qualifies as enough of a fling to join the rest. LaBeouf and Fox were reportedly hooking up on the set of the Michael Bay film. As E! noted in 2011, LaBeouf eventually admitted to the hookup. "I never understood the separation of work and life in that situation. But the time I spent with Megan was our own thing, and I think you can see the chemistry on screen."

This wasn't so much a fling as a long time coming. The model denied reports that she was dating Jonas in October of 2014, instead telling E! News that he was a "really good friend"; they had met at the Grammys when Hadid was only 13 years old. Things turned from friends to friendlier the following year when Hadid and Jonas started dating in June, only to break up in November. They were sure to add in that important, reassuring line that "they still remain friends."

Long before he married Meghan Markle, Harry was flirting with a summer romance. Seven years ago, he and lingerie model Brudenell-Bruce dated after he ended his seven-year-long relationship with Chelsy Davy. They went their separate ways after Harry left for helicopter training in the U.S. at the end of the summer.

The actors were first seen kissing over Fourth of July weekend in Sardinia in 2014, and by late August, they were no longer. This was a quick period of time, but then again, as Rodriguez told Interview magazine in 2015, that's about all she's game for. In 2014, she was romantically linked to both Efron and Cara Delevingne, but a long-term relationship was not on her priority list. "Look at me!" she said. "I have absolutely nothing consistent in my life. But that's where serendipity comes in and I love that. One day I'm going to have to sacrifice that to bring life into the world. But the more I can hold off on that, the happier I'll be. It's scary for me. I'm a lone wolf. I run by myself on most things."
