The Year in CHR/Hot AC 2017: Selena, Demi & Miley get more personal than ever

ABC/Image Group LASelena Gomez had a life-changing 2017, to say the least.

In September, the singer dropped the bombshell that she had undergone a kidney transplant due to complications from lupus. Her best friend, Francia Raisa, was the donor.

"I'm very aware some of my fans had noticed I was laying low for part of the summer and questioning why I wasn't promoting my new music, which I was extremely proud of," Selena wrote. "So I found out I needed to get a kidney transplant due to my Lupus and was recovering. It was what I needed to do for my overall health."

Selena may have been out of the spotlight for the better part of the year, but that didn't stop her from releasing new music. She started off with her collaboration with Kygo, "It Ain't Me," then followed it up with "Bad Liar" and "Fetish" over the summer. In November, she released "Wolves," a collab with DJ/producer Marshmello. She performed the song at the AMAs -- her first live performance since her kidney transplant -- and debuted new blonde locks.

Selena also donned her producer hat this year, producing the hit Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.

In the romance department, Selena began the year dating The Weeknd and ended it by rekindling her relationship with Justin Bieber.

As for what 2018 will bring, Selena says she's got a new album in the works.

This year, Selena also reunited with her old friend and fellow Disney alum, Demi Lovato. Demi had a pretty huge year in her own right, releasing her most soulful album to date: Tell Me You Love Me. The album features the hit single, "Sorry Not Sorry."

Demi also scored a hit this summer on the Cheat Codes track, "No Promises," and released a bilingual song with Luis Fonsi in November called "Echame La Culpa."

In October, Demi debuted a YouTube documentary, Simply Complicated, where she opens up about her addictions, her sexuality and the making of her album.

Outside of music, Demi collaborated with Kate Hudson's Fabletics to design a new collection of athletic wear.

Selena and Demi weren't the only ex-Disney stars with eventful years. Miley Cyrus left her wild days behind her this year, getting back together with ex-fiance Liam Hemsworth and releasing a more introspective album called Younger Now. The September release included her hit, "Malibu," and a duet with her godmother Dolly Parton called "Rainbowland."

In addition to changing her image, Miley also revealed that she gave up pot -- for now.

The singer continued her duties as a coach on The Voice for season 13.
