Ed Sheeran's global smash hit "Thinking Out Loud" has just passed the one billion-play mark on Spotify, becoming just the sixth song in history to do so. Being sixth is never the most exciting accomplishment, but the Grammy winner has plenty to celebrate now that his single has reached one of the most important milestones in the music industry.
The British singer-songwriter is now the only musician to have more than one song hit one billion streams on the world's most popular streaming platform. A representative for Spotify confirmed exclusively to me that the song finally has reached one billion streams, though an up-to-date play count wasn't also provided.
Sheeran first reached one billion listens with his 2017 blockbuster "Shape of You," which needed no time in becoming a massive success on the streaming giant. "Shape" was played by millions of people in just the first day, and it never really slowed down. In fact, while the tropical pop track was the third to see its play count move into nine digits, it has now moved ahead of all other songs, and it's the most popular tune of all time on Spotify. It now has over one and a half billion streams, and it is on its way to becoming the first to rack up two billion plays.
"Thinking" was, for a long time, one of the top songs on the platform, but it was quickly passed by more recent smashes by the likes of Drake, The Chainsmokers, Justin Bieber, and, unsurprisingly, Sheeran himself. The Grammy-winning pop ballad has become one of the most successful love songs ever released, and after just over three years of availability (it was first released in June of 2014), it has become the latest to join the exclusive club of compositions that people simply can't get enough of...to the tune of a billion streams.
There are several songs approaching one billion plays on Spotify, but only one or two are fronted by acts who have already entered the billion-stream club with a previous single. Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself" looks like it will be the seventh song to hit one billion, while The Chainsmokers and Daya's "Don't Let Me Down" isn't far behind. Those artists have already seen their smashes "Sorry" and "Closer" (respectively) rack up at least a billion streams, and they have other tunes still collecting millions of streams every week.
Sheeran's latest accomplishment proves that he is not just a successful artist (the most successful on Spotify this year, actually), he's one who understands how to rule where it counts in today's new musical economy, and his recent beloved songs feel like they were made to be streamed by millions around the world upon every occasion.
