A second weekend warrior was stretchered to hospital in agony after jabbing his bum on a railing in another bout.

One spectator told how watching families saw him poleaxed for half an hour during a violent clash at Scone Castle, Perthshire, left.

They said yesterday: "I was shocked by the brutality of it. The guy was knocked to the ground and he didn't get back on his feet for 30 minutes.

"He just lay there while an ambulance came and got him on a stretcher.

"They had to get someone to find a screwdriver and open up the pens they fight in as he couldn't climb out."

They added: "It surprised me there were people with young children there because it was pretty gruesome." Saturday's event in the castle grounds involved five teams from across the UK attacking each other using special swords, axes and shields in solo and team bouts.

Fighting for the spoils were The North, South East Invicta, Wessex Wyverns and Bristol Boars, the Scottish Knights League and a mercenary outfit.

A spokesman for Battle Heritage, a sports club which had teams at the event, said: "The man with the cut eye was glued up and is fine.

"The other banged his coccyx on the arena rails. We had first aiders on site take a look at him and an ambulance was called as a precaution. He was taken to hospital but was fine and back here two hours later."

And he insisted: "We are statistically safer than rugby and ice hockey."

Safer – but no less gory

Spectators at the historical bash also took in duelling, archery and a medieval military encampment.

Scone Palace is to host the International Medieval Combat Federation World Championships next year.
