James Arthur Denies He Dissed Zayn and Justin Bieber After Saying: "They Basically Want to Be Me"

He claims his words were taken out of context.

U.K. artist James Arthur just landed his first worldwide hit with his latest tearjerker single "Say You Won't Let Go" since competing on The X Factor: UK in 2012.

Sadly, he's making headlines today for a reason other than having a smash hit: For supposedly talking smack about his big-name contemporaries, namely Justin Bieber, Zayn, and Ed Sheeran.

While talking to The Sun about what direction he's going in for his third album — sexy slow jams, apparently — James wanted to make it perfectly clear that his sexy jams would not sound anything like Zayn's debut track, "Pillowtalk," or Justin's many hits. He went as far as to say they're actually trying to sound like him.

"I think Justin Bieber and Zayn have both been listening to me a lot and they basically wanna be me," James dished. He even claims he's got an inside man who can confirm that Zayn, at least, is getting some inspo from his tracks. "There's a couple of tracks of Zayn's where he ad libs. I asked Louis Tomlinson whether he's been listening to me and he said 'Yeah, he's been lurking.'"

Woah. Those are some heavy accusations.

After that, James took aim at artists like Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding for acting like they come from nothing when they actually come from money.

"I'm not saying none of these guys are talented, but people think Ed Sheeran crawled off a couch and lived on the street or something but him, Ellie Goulding... they all come from Suffolk, Surrey, Richmond. They come from support."

James thinks coming from money gave Ed and Ellie a leg up in the industry. "Those things can help artists get attention but I guess my song 'Say You Won't Let Go' proved it's about the song."

Obviously, Justin, Zayn, Ed, and Ellie's fans were not pleased with Arthur's criticism.

As the backlash mounted for James' comments, he took to Twitter to insist his comments were taken completely out of context.

And, for the record, that whole "Justin and Zayn wanna be me" thing was a big fat joke. Sarcasm is lost in print, you see.
