Bieber collaborator sets sights on Gotye

The man who helped make Justin Bieber cool again, American songwriter Poo Bear, has set his sights on working with an Australian artist.

Poo Bear, real name Jason Boyd, collaborated with Bieber on his last album Purpose, which sold more than three million copies, launched a massive world tour and gave Bieber some much-needed credibility.

And while he's just finished working on the new Jennifer Lopez album and has been collaborating with Sam Smith, Poo Bear's decided there's an Aussie artist worthy of his midas touch.

"I would love to work with Gotye," Poo Bear told AAP.

"Every now and then in life, somebody puts out music that inspires me and he's one of those. He put out that song Somebody That I Used To Know and when I first heard that back in 2012, that inspired me to be greater. I really would love to work with him one day."

Gotye, real name Wally De Backer, has reportedly been working on his new album in New York over the past year although he did return to Melbourne to record a live album with his original band, The Basics.

The record, In The Rude, will be released next month with no release date set for his anticipated fourth solo album.

With five Grammy awards to his name, De Backer could do a lot worse than a Poo Bear collaboration.

Through his work on Purpose, Poo Bear helped push Bieber from the cheesy realm of pure pop into the world of electronic music and R&B, and the Canadian singer has frequently credited him for his work on the record.

"It's both of our stories combined. It's how Justin feels and how I feel, and we put it together and created Purpose," Poo Bear said.

Poo Bear has worked with artists such as Usher, Chris Brown and Pink but said Bieber was still one of the first people to acknowledge his work behind the scenes.

"The only person to ever give me recognition was Justin Bieber. He's the only person to say my name over and over again," he said.

"He was really loyal and the first person to ever say my name in public."

An upcoming documentary follows Poo Bear's story, from being left homeless as a child when a tornado destroyed his home in Connecticut to his move to Atlanta and first foray into the music business at the age of 12.

"It's been a real tough journey," he said.

"But since Justin Bieber went on this Poo Bear campaign and a lot of people know I made songs with him, a lot of people now when they work with me, they actually mention my name. I remember people never saying my name but now it's cool to say 'I worked with Poo Bear'."
