WHEN it comes to loving and admiring celebrities, there's the normal level of adoration and then, there's a step above.

While plenty of fans toe the line between diehard and blatantly crazy, these are the fans that have taken things a little too far.

While the list is, unsurprisingly, dominated by the likes of Justin Bieber and One Direction, there are a few who'll surprise you.

Here's the times diehard fans went absolutely wild.

PLASTIC SURGERY

Tobias Strebel was a mega fan of Justin Bieber, so much so he spent close to $100,000 on plastic surgery to look like the Sorry singer.

The surgeries were spread out over a period of more than five years and included a smile surgery with a month recovery time as well as an eyelid surgery that left him unable to open his eyes for a week.

The 35-year old had a number of stints on reality shows including Botched and Inside Edition telling the show "[Justin's] just extraordinarily beautiful."

Strebel tragically passed away in 2015 after his body was discovered in a Los Angeles hotel room.

A Filipino man by the name of Herbet Chaves underwent 23 surgeries in an attempt to look like his hero Superman which worked surprisingly well.

The 40-year old has been obsessed with the superhero ever since he saw Christopher Reeve star as the cape wearing crusader back in 1978.

Chaves spent close to $6000 AUD on his surgeries — equivalent to a small fortune in the Philippines.

TATTOOS

Fans that get the occasional tattoo of their favourite star isn't uncommon — fans that cover their entire bodies? A little less common.

This was the case with 40-year old Carl McCoid who, by 2015, had 29 tattoos all dedicated to Miley Cyrus.

McCoid spent more than $5000 on all of the tattoos but vowed last year to have them all removed after Cyrus herself called them "creepy ... and really ugly."

The British man even named one of his daughters after the 24-year old pop star but said he now regrets the tattoos telling the Daily Express they have ruined his reputation and love life.

The boys of One Direction are huge tattoo fans with the majority of them covering their bodies with them.

While 50-year old Jayne Bailey mightn't be the typical age of a One Direction fan, she is old enough to get tattoos which, numbering past 20, are all dedicated to the British boy band.

Bailey has exact replicas of Harry Styles' tattoos — two swallows on his chest — and even exactly copied the arm tattoos of Louis Tomlinson.

The British mum also has all of the boys autographs and birthdays tattooed on her forearm.

WASTING MONEY

Some fans are so crazy for celebs, they're willing to waste money on absolutely nothing.

When One Direction hit Australian shores back in 2012, they appeared on Sunrise where band member Niall Horan was invited to sample Australia's favourite breakfast — toast with vegemite.

While the Irishman wasn't much of a fan of the salty spread, Sunrise was a fan of the segment, deciding to post the bitten toast on eBay.

Bidding for the spat out toast eventually hit $100,00 and was donated to charity YouthCare.

Niall wasn't a fan of the vegemite toast but the person who paid $100,000 for it clearly was.

When it comes to a blatant and dangerous way to waste money, throwing an iPhone at someone is up there.

Ed Sheeran recounted to Rolling Stone a time a girl threw her iPhone at the singer while he was performing and the insane story of him trying to return it.

"When we tried to get into the phone to find a number to call, it was locked. Then we realised her screen saver was a screen grab of a text that said 'ring this number.'"

The screenshotted number was actually the number of the thrown iPhone.

"She was hoping that I'd see it and call. Luckily, her dad ended up waiting at the back of the venue and we managed to get it back to her," Sheeran said.

SELFIES

One Direction fans are up there with being some of the craziest in the world which was made clear in a recent essay written by Harry Style's sister Gemma.

The older sister of the 1D star recently revealed a fan turned up at their grandmother's funeral claiming to be a 'distant relative' purely to get a selfie with the singer.

"At the risk of sounding horrendously British — have a bit of bloody decorum, will you?" she wrote.

DJ prodigy Martin Garrix also had an awkward story on fans trying to grab selfies.

"I was on the toilet — I was peeing, and someone recognised me and had his phone and was like, 'Can I take a selfie?' I was like, 'Dude, are you serious right now?!'" Garrix recalled to People. " I couldn't believe it — super awkward."

It shouldn't come as much of a surprise then that some stars are boycotting fan selfies.

Justin Bieber was the most vocal, taking to his now-deleted Instagram to announce he'd stop taking photos with fans.

"It has gotten to the point that people won't even say hi to me or recognise me as a human," the 22-year old wrote.

"I feel like a zoo animal, and I wanna be able to keep my sanity."

INSANE STORIES

A diehard fan of Ricky Martin literally broke into the hotel's vents to get into the Livin' La Vida Loca singer's room.

Martin recounted the wild story in an interview with British TV show This Morning.

"(I was) walking around my room naked and I hear this (noise). I'm like, someone is in this room. They were in the vents. They found a way to get into the ventilation of the room. But you know what, I had to take a picture with them, and (sign) autographs and everything, because really they were … I'm still talking about it."

The Jonas Brothers, back in their hey day, had some crazy fans.

On a Carpool Karaoke with James Corden, Nick Jonas recalled when "someone jumped in the back [of their car] and was hiding in the luggage."

When the Jonas Brothers pulled up at the gig, the solo fan came out from her hiding place and tried to jump on the boys who had to sprint away.

An obsessed fan of Paula Abdul took her own life just a few doors away from the American Idol judge's Hollywood residence in 2008.

The woman, named Paula Goodspeed (she changed her name to Paula at 16), overdosed on pills while sitting in her car not long after a humiliating audition on Idol where she declared her love for the singer.

Abdul later said she was still deeply affected by the death and was furious at the show's producers for letting the fan audition.

She told People, "I told them, 'this girl is a stalker of mine. Please do not let her in.' Everyone knew. I was shaking."
