Canadians dominate heading into American Music Awards

Drake, Justin Bieber and The Weeknd are just some of the Canadians vying for American Music Awards on Sunday.

In fact, the three musicians will compete against each other — and only each other — in the category of favourite male artist — pop/rock.

Drake will be up against himself in three categories: Collaboration of the year (One Dance with Wizkid and Kyla, Work with Rihanna), favourite album — rap/hip-hop (Views, What a Time to Be Alive with Future) and favourite song — soul/R&B (One Dance, Work).

The Grammy-winning Toronto rapper broke Michael Jackson's record for most AMA nominations after scoring 12, but it's unclear whether he'll attend.

One prize Drake won't be getting is artist of the year. But Stratford, Ont.-born Bieber could — he's the only male musician nominated in that category alongside powerhouses Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez and Carrie Underwood.

Bieber, who will perform from his world tour in Zurich, Switzerland, is up for multiple awards. Sorry will compete for video of the year against Drake and Rihanna's Work, which was shot at Toronto's Real Jerk restaurant.

The Love Yourself singer could also nab awards for favourite song – pop/rock and favourite album – pop/rock, but he'll have to battle Drake once again, as well as Adele, to get there.

Some big-name acts will perform at the fan-voted show held in Los Angeles. Among them: John Legend, Maroon 5, The Chainsmokers and Sting, who will also receive the American Music Award of Merit. Canada's Shawn Mendes, who is up for new artist of the year along with fellow Canuck Alessia Cara, will also perform.

Presenters include Taraji P. Henson, Robert Downey Jr., Zoe Saldana and Heidi Klum. Former Saturday Night Live comic Jay Pharaoh and model Gigi Hadid will host the show.​
