Adele up for four gongs at American Music Awards

Adele will battle it out with Drake, Rihanna and Justin Bieber for honours at the American Music Awards, where Sting is being recognised with a lifetime achievement accolade.

Some of the biggest names in music are attending the star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles, where the award-winners are chosen by the public.

Adele is up for four awards including favourite pop/rock female artist, favourite pop/rock song for Hello, favourite adult contemporary artist and favourite pop/rock album for 25.

Drake received a record 13 nominations but missed out on the final shortlist for artist of the year award, which will see Bieber, Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande and Carrie Underwood compete for the top gong.

Sting will receive the American Music Award of Merit, which was last awarded to Annie Lennox in 2008.

Former One Direction singer Zayn Malik is nominated for new artist of the year, along with Shawn Mendes, Alessia Cara, The Chainsmokers and DNCE.

Malik's former bandmate Niall Horan is singing his debut solo single This Town on the night, while Bieber will perform during the show from Switzerland where he is on tour.

Other artists performing include Lady Gaga, Green Day, John Legend, Bruno Mars and British singer James Bay.

Model Gigi Hadid and comedian Jay Pharoah are hosting this year's show from the Microsoft Theatre in central LA.

The ceremony begins at 5pm local time (1am Monday GMT).
