Justin Bieber will probably return to Instagram

Justin Bieber stunned the world of Beliebers when he deleted his Instagram account early Tuesday, but they shouldn't start preparing for the apocalypse just yet.

That's because people who pay attention to the social media habits of celebrities say it's pretty common for stars to temporarily quit Twitter or Instagram if they feel battered by too many negative comments -- only to return days, weeks, months or even years later.

Bieber carried out his threat of quitting after his account was inundated with hateful comments on posts showing him with his reported new girlfriend, 17-year-old Sofia Richie. However, he hasn't abandoned social media for good, keeping his Twitter and Facebook accounts.

With regard to Instagram, the proverbial straw that apparently drove Bieber from the app was a highly publicized online spat with his ex-girlfriend Selena Gomez.

It started with her scolding him for what she said was him disrespecting his fans by making such a threat. It devolved into the two trading accusations that each cheated on the other when they were together. Bieber went ahead and deleted his account, even after Gomez apparently backtracked on her comments, calling them "selfish and pointless."

So Bieber is gone, but for how long? Consider the fact that the 22-year-old singer/exhibitionist seemed to really crave the reactions of his 80 million Instagram followers -- to the extent that he would regularly post full-frontal nude shots of himself. If that's not attention-seeking behavior, what is?

Writers from various outlets, including The Boston Globe and Mashable, predict Bieber will be back by noting other celebrities who have given up, weary from the hate, only to return sometime later.

One was Leslie Jones. The "Ghostbusters" and "Saturday Night Live" actress temporarily left Twitter after an onslaught of racist tweets following the release of her movie. After Twitter deleted several of the worst tweets and permanently banned some accounts, including that of Breitbart writer Milo Yiannopoulos, Jones returned. Her tweets about the Olympics were so successful that NBC flew her to Rio to livetweet the games in person.

Meanwhile, Demi Lovato quit Instagram and Twitter earlier this year, for reasons that were never quite clear. But she returned 24 hours later, Mashable said, with the announcement: "I'm back (explectives)."

Other temporary quitters include Rob Kardashian, Chelsea Handler and Jennifer Love Hewitt who abandoned Instagram or Twitter for anywhere from two weeks to a month. Others, like Rihanna, Mylie Cyrus and John Mayer, have taken social media breaks for far longer -- six months, two years and four years respectively.

"Pink and John Mayer's lengthy absences, paired with Demi Lovato's quick delete, really throw off the average, but with them included, it seems about a year away from Twitter or Instagram is the standard (celebrity) break," Mashable wrote. How long a celebrity stays away can depend on age, profession, schedule and what they view as the PR advantages or disadvantages of staying away too long.

"But for now, it's anyone's guess when Justin Bieber will return," Mashable said.
