Justin Bieber's Purpose singles "What Do You Mean" and "Love Yourself" just got the retro treatment, thanks to these newly-discovered remixes on Soundcloud. A user named Tronicbox stripped the vocals from the Bieber songs and mixed them over true '80s-sounding tracks—synths, bass lines and all.
"What Do You Mean?," a ticking dance track, was transformed into "What Do You Mean It's 1985," a kind of pop ballad you'd expect to hear in the background of a John Hughes prom scene. Yes, it includes a saxophone solo.
Meanwhile "Love Yourself," Bieber's acoustic and minimalist and underhanded diss track became "Love Yourself (Purpose 1985)," a more upbeat iteration complete with a slap bass for a touch of funk.
As impressive as his remixes are, perhaps their most entertaining features are the artwork, featuring Justin Bieber in a mullet—quite the digression from his bleach blonde dreads or current buzzcut.
If you're not a fan of the 1985 reworks, here's a reminder of what Bieber's original "What Do You Mean?" sounds like:
