Local dancer shares stage with Justin Bieber

When Caledonia's Lexi Hoppe, 10, submitted a video for the opportunity to dance with Justin Bieber in Toronto, she and her family knew it would be a long shot. With only eight spots available and tens of thousands of applicants, calling the odds slim would be an understatement.

The video was submitted in February and when they hadn't heard anything just a week before the show, they assumed that nothing came of it.

But on Saturday, May 14, she got the call she was waiting for. Hoppe was at a dance competition in Toronto when representatives from Bieber called, saying they needed a follow-up video in the next two hours.

"I was on stage for a tap concert and as soon as I came off, I put on hip-hop clothes and did the video again," said Hoppe.

Hoppe travelled to Toronto on May 19 to share the stage at the Air Canada Centre with one of Canada's most famous pop stars, doing freestyle and choreographed dance moves to Bieber's song "Children".

Before the show, she twice had to run through the moves with a Bieber stand-in in the empty arena, only meeting the famous star when she was on stage.

Hoppe was able to enjoy the concert from the pit area, before being called to the back a few songs before her performance.

"Half way through the song they told us to go on the stage and we freestyled for a minute, then we did some choreography," Hoppe said. "After the song he came and gave us hugs. He asked all our names and after he asked my name he said, "awesome, you killed it.""

She added that it was "really cool" dancing in front of that many people and she was only slightly nervous on the big stage.

Hoppe has been dancing since she was two and says her lifelong dream is to be a hip-hop backup dancer, a goal she was partially able to fill with Bieber. If she has her way, Hoppe's next stop will be sharing the stage with pop legend Justin Timberlake.
