If the reports are true and pop star Justin Bieber does feel like an animal on display in a cage, it sure is a gilded one.
The 22-year-old Stratford, Ont. native, who recently cancelled his meet-and-greets and said he's "done" taking fan photos, brought his Purpose World Tour home to the Air Canada Centre on Wednesday night for the first of two back-to-back shows.
And it's quite the production.
Biebs initially emerged wearing a No. 6 Toronto Maple Leafs captain hockey jersey - doesn't he know we're in full Raptors fever? - a blue bandana around his head, torn jeans and white sneakers.
But it was his ride that was eye-popping.
He first appeared inside a clear plastic box that sprang out of this enormous stage for Mark My Words, the first of many songs from Purpose, and rose up above the crowd to earthshattering screams.
Then it was time for Biebs to bust out the dance moves for the next song, Where Are U Now, with 12 dancers all dresssed in white, before he rose up yet again on a levitating stage at the front of his large catwalk for Get Used To It.
But not before long, Bieber was back behind walls, this time a circular black scrim that descended over him while he sang I'll Show You and lights were projected onto his surroundings as fireworks exploded on the stage behind him.
And the hits just kept on coming.
There were costume changes including into a kilt with leggings for crowd fave As Long As You Love Me; a drum solo on another elevated stage; a trampoline for Company which saw Biebs expertly and casually pull off a couple of backflips before he lie motionless for more than a few seconds at the end of the song; a moving conveyer belt that he walked on for Life Is Worth Living; an acoustic portion where he performed two songs by himself on acoustic guitar including Love Yourself and the show-ending rain storm that accompanied encore song Sorry which saw a soaked Bieber throw his T-shirt into the crowd afterwards.
He wasn't much of a talker during the hour-and-45-minute set but he did at least dedicate Children to "all the little kids" and welcomed young dancers to join him on stage.
It was the most animated he was all night as he introduced them afterwards.
Other song highlights including his older hits As Long As You Love Me, Baby and new song What Do You Mean?
Otherwise, Bieber's recently questionable behavior has included getting a face tattoo, shaving his head, and walking barefoot and sitting in a tree in a Boston park.
Hey, skintags, a short haircut and getting back to nature, it could be so much worse.
Just ask Biebs who spent the last couple of years in an on-again-off-again relationship with Selena Gomez, and in trouble with the law.
"I believe everybody has Purpose," said Bieber introducing the title track before he sat down on stage to sing it. "And I just wanted to share that positiveness."
Bieber's presence in town led to a pop up Purpose store on Queen Street West Wednesday and Thursday during the day .
Earlier this month, Bieber showed up at a similar temporary store in Manhattan, which popped up in conjunction with his two-night stand at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn.
