James Van Der Beek has defended Justin Bieber after the singer announced he would no longer be taking pictures with fans.
The Sorry singer took to Instagram.com on Tuesday (10May16) and declared he is "done" taking pictures with fans during his down time, because it makes him feel like a "zoo animal".
He continued, "I realize people will be disappointed but I don't owe anybody a picture. and people who say 'but I bought ur (sic) album' know that you got my album and you got what you paid for AN ALBUM! It doesn't say in fine print whenever you see me you also get a photo."
Many fans on social media criticised the singer, but now actor James Van Der Beek has leapt to the defence of 22-year-old Justin, admitting he also found it hard to be a heartthrob at the height of his Dawson's Creek fame.
James, who played Dawson in the '90s U.S. teen TV drama, said he understood why the Canadian superstar had decided to stop taking selfies with fans, but reminded him to not take them for granted.
The 39-year-old shared a throwback photo of himself on Instagram.com on Friday (13May16), which showed him wearing a corduroy hat and glasses in an effort to disguise himself from fans.
"Heard @justinbieber declared he's not taking selfies with fans anymore... Back in the olden times, when I couldn't go out without getting stopped for pics & autographs, I actually resorted to this look to hide," he wrote. "I remember feeling like a circus animal, feeling like people didn't give a s**t about me as a human being."
And the actor, who can currently be seen in the recently cancelled CSI: Cyber, also told his followers he received advice on how to deal with fame from an unexpected source - Oscar-winner Jon Voight.
"I remember thinking all they wanted was a pic and wouldn't care if I got hit by a bus afterwards. I felt all that. I get it. But here's the deal: You're able to make somebody very happy by doing something very simple. And that's a gift. And that's all it is. That's the advice Jon Voight gave me... And it turns out, he's right. It's not about what you take from the interaction, it's about what you give," he continued.
"It's easy to call Beiber a selfish a**hole. Easy to have zero sympathy for a famous rich kid who doesn't want to take pictures with excited little girls... But having tasted a little bit of what he seems to be drowning in... I just wanted to insert a little perspective. Fame isn't 'hard'... But it's tricky. There are a lot of potholes, and if you're not surrounded by the right inner circle, you'll trip."
Despite Justin's demand of no selfies, he reportedly agreed to a snap with a restaurant boss in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday (11May16). The star was in the city during a two-night concert stint when he posed happily with the boss of a local STRIP by Strega steakhouse, with the shot later shared on social media.
