Whale sanctuary in Westman Islands to open

Whaling has recommenced in Iceland and whaling company Hvalur hf has permission to hunt 161 fin whales this summer as well as using 20% of last year's quota. Hvalur hf. is working in cooperation with scientists at the Innovation Center in Iceland and the University of Iceland to use whale byproducts for medicinal use.

The Slow Food association has published an interview with Icelandic wunderkind chef Gísli Matthías Auðunsson. He's the founder of the critically acclaimed restaurant Slippurinn in the Westman Islands and also runs a small restaurant, Skál, at Hlemmur Mathöll, the food hall in Reykjavik.

Over 100 long-finned pilot whales swam twice up to shore at Snæfellsnes, West Iceland yesterday, many of them were wounded in the process. Locals worked together to push them back into the sea as you can see in the video. They were then hoarded further from shore on small boats.

A group of people is now working on putting up a whale sanctuary in Iceland's Westman Islands. The Idea is to receive three beluga whales from an amusement park in China.

Recently a new brewery called The Brothers Brewery opened in Iceland's Westman Islands. The Brothers Brewery has been producing and selling beer to locals since the beginning of 2016 and with the new pub, the owners want to offer a place where guests can enjoy a good beer in a quiet atmosphere.

First puffins of the summer have arrived in the Westman Islands. They were first spotted in the sea by the islands on Easter Sunday, and later in the evening they arrived at shore.

The Westman Islands are a stunning place to visit, with beautiful nature steeped in history and culture. There is even a local brewery and it's home to one of the highest rated restaurants in Iceland.

Humpback whales seem to be playful creatures, fond of splashing around in the surface of the sea and jumping. Having such an appetite for performing, they are particularly popular among whale watchers.

Biggest mammals on earth, Blue whales have been spotted at Skjálfandaflói, the bay north of whale watching town Húsavík in North Iceland. Blue whales venture into the bay in late winter and spring in search for something to eat. A great opportunity go get up close to these magnificent creatures.

Today is Labour Day in Iceland and a protest march and meeting took place in central Reykjavik.

After a couple of days of a bizarre mix of sun and bouts of snow and hail, temperatures are going up this weekend to start of the Icelandic summer.

The Free The Nipple cause caused an immense stir in Icelandic society yesterday, breaking down norms, raising questions and making a strong feminist statement. Women, men, girls and boys were united for gender equality. Mbl.is visited a few colleges in Reykjavík and interviewed students about what the day means to them.

And no- we're not talking about the psychedelic kind but the lovely Flúðir mushrooms grown in South Iceland. Farmers Bistro is a restaurant run at the mushroom farm and offers all of the fare grown at the farm- mushroms and vegetables - as well as lamb from nearby farms.

The Ásatrú temple in Öskjuhlíð in Reykjavik will be ready in the latter part of next year. There's been a break in construction of the temple but construction will begin again in January.
