Stars rally to support Conor McGregor after bus melee

A number of celebrities have jumped to Conor McGregor's defence after his shameful window-smashing rampage in New York last week.

One of the most unlikely supporters of the Dublin UFC fighter was Justin Bieber, who said: 'I think Conor will be fine. We all make mistakes.'

Travis Barker, a UFC super-fan and a member of rock band Blink 182, went a step further and said he understood the actions by the star nicknamed The Notorious.

'I would've probably done the same thing if someone punked my friend,' the drummer said. 'I love him to death.

'I can't agree with everything he did, he has to apologise. He should definitely be punished.'

Barker added he wouldn't like to see McGregor turfed out of the sport.

'It would be a shame not to see him fight in the UFC in 2018.'

Chris Brown, a rapper who has previously pleaded guilty to felony assault, said of McGregor's antics: 'We all get crazy sometimes.'

UFC middleweight fighter Michael Bipsing also commented on the McGregor controversy, saying: 'Conor is not trying to be a gangster. Conor is just trying to look after his boys. He made a mistake, that's all it is Everyone still loves him, he'll be back.'

However, not everybody was full of praise for the 29-year-old.

Floyd Mayweather, the boxer whose fight with McGregor last year was the second highest payper-view buy rate in history, said McGregor should show some class.

'I feel that when you have reached such high status you have to carry yourself in a classy way,' Mayweather said. 'Outside the ring you have to carry yourself as a gentleman.'

Before Mayweather beat McGregor in the boxing match last year, McGregor taunted him at press conferences, joking about Mayweather's colourful dress sense and calling him 'boy'.

Last week, McGregor was charged with three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief – charges that carry up to 11 years in jail in total – after footage emerged of him appearing to attack a bus carrying rival fighters, injuring a number of UFC athletes.

He was released on a $50,000 bail and will return to New York on June 14 to face his charges.
