Hall of Famers are lining up to criticize Odell Beckham Jr. First was Cris Carter, and now comes Ray Lewis. The legendary linebacker believes the Giants' lightning-rod wide receiver has allowed "chaos" into his life, and is trending in the wrong direction.
"Where there is no God, there is chaos," Lewis said on FS1 with Colin Cowherd on Monday. "I started to see he started to distance himself a little more and a little more and a little more. Listen to me. I don't care about religion. I'm talking about a foundation.
"When your foundation is disturbed, when everything you are doing is the opposite of what got you to this place, then you are making your own life hard."
Lewis believes Beckham's life has gone awry this offseason. He was seen in a video with what appeared to be drugs and is the defendant in a $15 million lawsuit Beckham has called a "shakedown attempt." He has been the subject of trade rumors, and there have been rumors he would hold out for a contract extension. Beckham did attend OTAs on Monday.
Carter previously said of Beckham: "It's enough of the excuses; it's time for you to grow up and stop being a little boy."
Lewis, like Carter, has spent time mentoring Beckham. He said the two would speak frequently on the phone and read from the Bible. But lately, Beckham has pulled away, spending more time with Hollywood types like Drake, Justin Bieber and Justin Timberlake.
"You show me your crowd, I will show you your future," Lewis said. "Justin Timberlake ain't never played no football. I love Justin, but he ain't getting on the ground like that."These guys [Beckham] is hanging out with, they are in studios all night. They don't have to get up. They don't have no discipline when it comes to athleticism. It's a totally different discipline.
"In everything that he is doing, he is crying out for help," Lewis added. "We have a lot of people reporting about it. But it's always been the duty of elders to go back to help. That's why I raised my hand and told him, 'I'm here whenever you need me.'"
Both alleged mentors, it should be noted, ran into trouble off the field that Beckham has not. Carter was an admitted drug user early in his career while Lewis pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in the stabbing deaths of two people in 2000.
