Once childhood sweethearts, Justin Bieber and Stratford's Cherissa Kittmer reconnected this week after years apart.
According to Cherissa Kittmer's father, Mike Kittmer, his daughter was in California on vacation when Bieber reached out over social media earlier this week looking to reconnect. On Thursday, the pair reunited for the first time in nine years at a private airport before flying to Indio, CA to attend The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.
"They originally met at Bedford Public School (in Stratford)… and then they graduated on to St. Mike's (St. Michael Catholic Secondary School) later on," Mike Kittmer said. "She hung out with him quite a bit at Bedford Public School in Grade 5 and 6. They played a lot of co-ed volleyball together… They became really good friends – my daughter considers Justin to be her very first boyfriend in Grade 5."
Though the pair remained close through most of high school, when they were both 15 Bieber moved to Atlanta to pursue his music career and they fell out of touch.
Now, both Bieber and Cherissa Kittmer are 24 years old (their birthdays are two days apart), and Kittmer has been working in Vancouver in marketing. Hoping to one day move to California, Cherissa Kittmer was in the state on holiday visiting friends when Bieber reached out.
"Justin had found her on Facebook, and said, 'Hey, you want to get together?' And she said, 'Ya, sure,' so Justin met her at a private airport, they jumped onto his jet, and then they went to Indio," Mike Kittmer said, adding that he's happy Bieber and his daughter were able to reconnect all these years later.
Mike Kittmer said Bieber and his daughter have reconnected as friends at this point, but he thought it likely they will see more of each other after their trip to Coachella concludes this weekend.
"Despite what the media portrays him to be, Justin definitely remembers where he came from and his humble beginnings in Stratford," he said.
