Justin Timberlake's 'Man Of The Woods' Opens At No. 1 With 2018's Biggest Week

It's been five years since Justin Timberlake last released a full-length album (two, actually), but in that time, he seemingly hasn't lost any of his star power. The pop star's new album Man of the Woods has started at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, which is a spot Timberlake has become used to occupying over the years. Man of the Woods moved 293,000 equivalent copies, with 242,000 of those being actual sales. That sum is enough to grant the singer the largest week and the largest opening frame of 2018, though the year is still young.

Man of the Woods is Timberlake's fourth consecutive chart-topper as a solo artist. Including his work with NSYNC, he now has six No. 1 records to his name. As a member of the boy band that made him a star and as a solo musician, he has also collected a pair of records that stalled in the runner-up slot (both NSYNC and Timberlake's first full-lengths peaked at No. 2), and the chart-topping vocal group also placed another album inside the top 10, which means that Timberlake has now earned nine top 10 albums.

The crooner's fifth solo full-length was promoted with four singles, all of which received a fair amount of attention in a short span of time. Lead single "Filthy" was released just a few days into 2018, and it was immediately divisive, with some loving the sonic shift, though the risk he took by including weird electronic elements didn't go over well with everyone. The song did debut at No. 9 on the Hot 100, giving him another top 10 smash, though it only managed one week in the region.

Timberlake followed that success with three more songs, which all seemed to serve as promotional singles. First came the poorly-reviewed "Supplies," which only managed to peak at No. 71 on the all-encompassing tally. Follow-up country-pop cut "Say Something" with Chris Stapleton (who has worked with Timberlake before) matched the lofty debut of "Filthy," beginning at No. 9. The final new track shared just as the album was launching, "Man of the Woods," has yet to debut on the Hot 100, though it might make an appearance when that chart refreshes soon.

All four songs were accompanied by music videos shot by different directors, and each had a completely different look and feel, and they couldn't have looked less like one another, which is what the superstar intended.

Man of the Woods benefits not only from Timberlake's celebrity and his absence (he hasn't released an album since 2013, when he dropped two installments of The 20/20 Experience several months apart), and the fact that he headlined the Super Bowl halftime show just two days after the record was made available certainly helped him begin at No. 1.
