Entertain Us (23-1-2018): Camila hits the right note

I REALISED I had listened to way too few albums last year after writing our list of 2017's best (YPCT 3-1-18).

I made a resolution to listen to more this year — I think this might be a New Year's resolution I can actually stick to!

Last year I wanted to read a book a week (yes, quite ambitious).

I think I might have read four for the year.

I've given Camila Cabello's debut album Camila a few spins so I'm going to tell ya'll all about it.

But first, some background.

Cabello rose to fame as a member of Fifth Harmony, a girl group created on America's X Factor TV show in 2012, but announced she was going solo in late 2016.

She was the Beyonce of the group but she was never my favourite.

However, she had me won over before the album even dropped.

She released Crying in the Club last year and it was an absolute banger.

She has paired with Shawn Mendes, Machine Gun Kelly and provided vocals for Major Lazer's Know No Better alongside two of 2017's hottest acts, Travis Scott and Quavo.

Cabello also released OMG with Quavo, which sounds like a Latina version of Beyonce's 7/11 – yes, what a lit combination.

After these I was expecting good things from her album and she delivered.

There's a variety of big tunes, acoustic numbers and songs paying homage to her Cuban and Mexican heritage.

Lead single Havana was one such Latin-inspired number and has been on high rotation around the world.

There are Justin Bieber and Ed Sheeran vibes on All These Years and Real Friends, a catchy reggaeton beat courtesy of Skrillex on She Loves Control and something that sounds like a mixture of Halsey, Hailee Steinfeld and Selena Gomez on Never Be The Same.

While I didn't love the whole album and it pales in comparison to the brilliance of Lorde's Melodrama (the best album of 2017), it had more depth than I expected.

It also hit number one on the Billboard albums chart over the weekend.

Cabello has a maturity well beyond her 20 years which I guess is unsurprising after being in the public eye since the age of 15.

The album has shown she's not just got the voice, the looks and the likeabilty — she's also not a bad little songwriter.
