'Despacito' on the Radio: More Than 10 Million Spins in 24 Hours — and Growing

"Despacito," the smash of the summer which saw a surge in renewed popularity once Justin Bieber jumped on the track with Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, is riding an astonishing streak at the top of the Billboard charts, logging its sixth week at No. 1 on the Hot 100. On the radio, that means listeners are, indeed, hearing the song multiple times in an hour.

According to iHeartRadio, "Despacito" notched more than 10 million total audience spins across its national network of more than 800 stations just on Saturday (June 17) alone — 10.07 million, to be exact. The song is a rare hit that's impacting multiple formats, including Pop, Top 40, Hot AC, Rhythm, Urban, and, of course, Latin. Among iHeart's radio properties are New York's Z100 and Los Angeles' KIIS-FM.

"To have a full-on Spanish song achieve this kind of success is unprecedented," Tom Poleman, IHeartMedia's chief programming officer, tells Variety. Previously, when it came to a cross-format success, the "cultural barrier" had been broken several times by songs in Spanglish or featuring one key line (Ricky Martin's "Livin' La Vida Loca" was a No. 1 hit for 5 weeks in 1999; "Macarena spent 14 weeks at the top spot in 1996), Poleman notes. "I think it's great – great for music."

iHeartMedia, which operates more stations in the United States as well as its own iHeartRadio streaming platform, is playing multiple versions of the Fonsi song — depending on the audience, "some of our stations don't play the Justin version," adds Poleman. "And we notice that people stream all different versions, too."

"Despacito" also sits at the top of Spotify's Global Top 50 chart, averaging more that 6.5 million plays daily, according to the streaming service. It's followed by two more Bieber-supported tracks, "I'm the One" by DJ Khaled and "2U" by David Guetta, but don't expect either to be overcome imminently. As iHeart's Poleman notes, "You hear 'Despacito' everywhere. It's not going away anytime soon."

Plenty of Purpose as Justin Bieber delights awesome Dublin crowd

In perhaps a marked attempt to distance himself from his badboy days, a very punctual Justin Bieber showed up on stage at the RDS in Dublin a mere four minutes after his scheduled start time to screams of pure adulation from the audience. Camera phones aloft, the crowd basked in the glory of his presence as he emerged in a glass box to Mark My Words, the first track from his career-changing 2015 album Purpose.

It was a slow way to ease into the gig, and Biebs was a cool character on stage, kitted out in a simple black tee and slick Purpose tour shorts (which I think the vast majority of audience members were coveting). He strolled across the stage looking studiously casual with his hands stuffed into his pockets and a nonchalant expression on his face.

Things really kicked off with his incredible Skrillex and Diplo collaboration Where Are U Now and the full extent of the stage production revealed itself as his troupe of dancers dove into action. An early injection of fireworks and pyrotechnics surprised and delighted the crowd in equal measure and added some much needed energy.

In stark contrast to his spirited backing dancers, Justin cracked out his moves like he was on low power mode. It felt a bit like he was phoning it in at times, but it doesn't seem to bother his predominantly young, female audience in the slightest. His casual approach to the choreography and generally chill demeanor, in all probability, are a big part of the appeal.

He was fond of deploying metaphors during the production, but the decision to stage the entirely of I'll Show You in a metal cage didn't quite work. I'm sure creating a sense of detachment from his audience is what he intended to achieve, but the energy flagged badly during the track. In fact, at the outset of the gig it seemed like Bieber wasn't sure how to react to the crowd's screams and worship. At times it felt like he was in a state of flux, trying to distance himself from his tween persona without knowing where to take it.

He allowed himself a rare smile when he kicked off his 2012 hit Boyfriend, one of the few oldies that has made it onto the tracklist, which was met with unabashed fervour from his fans.

Taking it down a notch, he cracked out his acoustic guitar for a rendition of Cold Water, followed by a downbeat, and quite frankly a little underwhelming, version of his mega-hit single Love Yourself. The crowd don't seem to mind and particularly relished singing back the killer line "My momma don't like you, and she likes everyone". That has to be one of the greatest put-downs in recent pop history.

His ensuing drum solo was impressive (and blessedly short) and it segued into Children to the utter delight of the crowd. It was here that we got to see a different, softer side of the popstar as he was joined onstage by a group of talented young Beliebers who cracked out some seriously impressive choreography alongside him. After the song finished, he high-fived and hugged all of the performers multiple times, before asking each and every one of them their name while encouraging the audience to cheer for them. It's clear he knows what the experience meant to his young fans and he gave them all their moment in the spotlight. It was genuinely touching.

Justin markedly picked up the pace after this, lightheartedly remarking "I think you might know this one" before kicking off Something Beautiful to the audiences's delight. His mood much-elevated, he seemed to be feeding off the onlookers, and in a rare burst of emotion professed "You guys are awesome", before adding "it's great to be here". He then finally cracked out What Do You Mean, which we were all waiting for impatiently. It was more than worth the wait. Even heavy rainfall couldn't dampen the crowd's enthusiasm when he followed with his impossibly catchy 2010 hit Baby.

Well and truly warmed up at this stage, Justin took the opportunity to give his audience a little pep talk, imploring his fans to find their true purpose in life. "This is my purpose and I'm honoured to share it with you", he said, and they didn't feel like empty words.

He saved the best for last, returning onstage for an encore to the impossibly good Sorry. He seemed swept up in the moment himself, taking time to gaze up at the breathtaking fireworks display lighting up the Dublin sky, saying "Wow, that's crazy. Things are gonna get crazy tonight".

Is it too late now to say sorry? No apologies needed Justin, your purpose is clear.

Spotify ad calling Justin Bieber 'Latin King' deleted

Outrage over a Spotify ad about Justin Bieber caused the streaming service to pull the post.

A sponsored ad began popping up on Instagram last week, declaring the pop star a "Latin King" after his new single, "Despacito," a remix of the hit by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee.

But the Canadian singer, who has even admitted he doesn't know the words to his own Spanish-language song, doesn't quite fit the bill.

"@Spotify, @justinbieber is not the new Latin King," one person wrote on Twitter. "He can't even sing in Spanish. Take that s--t ad off Instagram."

Justin Bieber can't sing 'Despacito,' almost gets hit by bottle

"So @Spotify thought it was a good idea to ignore every single Latinx artists & are instead call Justin Bieber a 'Latin king,'" wrote another. "Do better."

Spotify pulled the ad after backlash.

"We made a creative decision to feature Justin Bieber in our ad because we wanted to celebrate 'Despacito' as key cultural moment when music genres crossover," a Spotify spokesperson told the Daily News.

"We realized that this could be seen as culturally insensitive so we have pulled those ads."

Justin Bieber raises temperatures even higher in Dublin with thrilling RDS concert

It's hard to believe Justin Bieber could have raised temperatures any higher in Dublin on Wednesday night.

But he sent the mercury soaring when he burst onto the RDS stage in the sweltering summer heat.

The pop prince was back in Dublin for the second time in seven months and he was well and truly back with a bang.

Belting out hit after hit from a back catalogue that belies his age, Justin proved exactly why he's loved by millions of fans worldwide.

And he thrilled the 18,000 fans who packed out the RDS on Wednesday night to see him.

Dressed head to toe in black and forced to wear shorts because of the heat, he was on stage bang on time at 8.15pm and launched straight into Mark My Words.

But he was almost drowned out by the screams of the adoring Irish crowd.

Fireworks lit up the south Dublin sky as Bieber belted out hit after hit.

Where Are You Know came next and Bieber showed off the dance moves that made him famous when he was just a schoolboy.

There was a drizzle of rain from early on but not even that was enough to dampen the party atmosphere.

He can sing, he can dance, and he can put on a show.

And he was clearly having a good time as he roared out: How you doing Ireland!

Every girl in the place went a little weak at the knees at Bieber sang If I Was Your Boyfriend - and the lads were just as bad.

Spotify's Cringe-Worthy Ad Dubbing Justin Bieber A 'Latin King' Is Stoking Outrage

Getty Image

Perhaps you're familiar with one Justin Bieber, pop star extraordinaire whose latest album Purpose officially welcomes him into the realm of "adult," and who has been on a bit of a tear when it comes to unf*ckwithable pop singles lately, word to "I'm The One."

One such is a remix of Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi's "Despacito," a co-sign that has catapulted the song into the wider mainstream consciousness in a way that a Latin single has not seen in quite some time.

However, keep in mind that the song was great before he hopped on it, that he is not Latinx in any way — in fact he's Canadian — and even further, that he doesn't even know the Spanish section of the song. In fact, at a recent performance he was openly mocking the Spanish lyrics. Not the greatest look for our young pop star.

All that context is probably why a recent Spotify-sponsored ad that was showing up in social feeds has stoked quite a bit of outrage from the actual Latinx community. The sponsored post purports that Justin is "Now Latin King" and people have already been calling the company out for this rather gross generalization:

And really? Based off one remix of one single they're going to hand over the throne? This was a poorly conceived and poorly executed attempt to ride for one of the summer's hottest songs. Instead, Spotify should've highlighted some of the fascinating Latinx artists who are working in the pop milieu.

For instance, I would like to know so much more about Daddy Yankke or Luis Fonsi, what are their stories? Spotify has the resources to tell those narratives and the platform to get people to pay attention, why not highlight the real creators of the song? Or, they could've praised Bieber another way, he certainly is worthy of admiration as well. This wasn't the right way to go about it, though.

This screengrab is from a couple days ago, so who knows if the company has since phased this particular ad out or not. Hopefully they have. Yesterday, a user wrote in to the Spotify community asking them to take the ad down, but the company has yet to respond.

Gardaí have removed up to 40 teenagers from the Dart on their way to the Justin Bieber concert in the RDS.

It followed complaints from rush hour commuters that the gang of "Beliebers" were engaged in anti-social behaviour. They were alleged to be vandalising train carriages.

Irish Rail staff responded to complaints and contacted gardai who met the Dart at Booterstown station in south Dublin from where between 30 and 40 of the teenagers were removed.

The incident added to rush hour Dart delays on Wednesday which began when a truck collided with a bridge near Pearse Street Station.

The incident occurred at the Erne Street Bridge just outside Pearse Station during peak travelling time on Wednesday evening.

Irish Rail had advised of delays of about 30 minutes between stations.

A spokesman said a truck had collided with the bridge and an engineer had been called to inspect it for any structural damage. Services subsequently resumed.

Maynooth restaurant owner chats about Justin Bieber popping in for dinner

It was far from a normal Tuesday in Maynooth yesterday as Justin Bieber popped into a local restaurant for dinner.

Liz Cascella, owner of Picaderos Restaurant in Maynooth, spoke to Kathryn Thomas on the Ray D'Arcy show earlier about the crazy experience.

Arriving with just his bodyguard in tow, Kathryn was quick to ask what he had to eat while there: A chicken tequila wrap with nachos, a tuna melt and an iced coffee.

Cascella went on to speak about her how two daughters and niece arrived in after school but decided to leave him eat his lunch in peace.

Given that he arrived in after a busy lunch shift, Liz shut the door of the restaurant worrying that he would have been mobbed if people knew he was inside, in Picaderos.

"Nobody knew that he was in there and I felt so bad for all the school kids walking by".

What will be the 2017 song of the summer? Here are the contenders

Each year, music writers like to play a game where we attempt to predict the "song of the summer," the track that, come September, will define the preceding months of sand and sunshine. It's a bit of an arbitrary distinction — there is often more than one "it" song — but this annual exercise is not entirely without its merit. The so-called "song of the summer" provides a much-needed window into the past; it's a metric, flawed but unambiguous, of who we were and what we danced to.

Here are our guesses for 2017's summer anthem:

[embedded content]

The Frontrunner

"Despacito – Remix" (Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee ft. Justin Bieber)

It's a shame that most Americans only happened upon Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's foot-stomping, hip-shaking "Despacito" after it was remixed and translated – the original is a masterclass in sultry club smut – but it's a blessing it made it to U.S. listeners in some form, however diluted.

The musical equivalent of a street dance on a summer night, "Despacito" is the most block-party-ready beat on this list, a key determinant in the "song of summer" race. This danceability ought to keep Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's reggaeton collaboration bumping on the radio until at least September.

A mid-April release, however, raises the question of whether  "Despacito"  even deserves to be considered a "song of summer." As a purist, I vote no. But the track's immense and unwavering popularity suggests I might be on the wrong side of history.

[embedded content]

Possible upset

"Feels" (Calvin Harris ft. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry, Big Sean)

Should "Despacito" take an unlikely tumble, Calvin Harris' "Feels" is sure to be first in line to inherit the crown. Harris' track, the newest off of his forthcoming album, features a who's who of "song of summer" vets. Pharrell Williams (of "Happy," 2013's song of summer) takes lead on vocals, Katy Perry (whose album "Teenage Dream" ruled summer 2010) sings back-up and Harris, no stranger himself to the summer music landscape (see 2016's "This Is What You Came For" and 2014's "Summer"), crafts a ska-guitar infused rhythm that is sipping coladas laid-back yet irrefutably vivacious.

Some speculate that "Feels" is a diss track intended for Harris' ex-girlfriend and Perry's long-time nemesis, Taylor Swift. After the Perry/Swift "Swish Swish" kerfuffle a few weeks ago, this slight intimation of further bad blood between the two superstars might give Harris' song the boost it needs.

[embedded content]

Dark horse

Anything off "Melodrama" (Lorde)

Despite being the best track of 2017 so far, Lorde's "Greenlight" made little to no splash when it dropped in March as the first single from "Melodrama," the Aussie wunderkind's sophomore album. Since then,  Lorde has released a handful of electrifying singles – the last-call party anthem "Sober" and scream-it-from-the-sun-roof "Perfect Places" – to similarly insufficient fanfare.

Now with "Melodrama" out in full, it seems only fair that Lorde have her day in the sun. My pick: the brooding and brilliant "Supercut." Because of Lorde's predilection for the ponderous, however, it might take a miracle, or a remix, to put this track in the pop pantheon where it belongs.

[embedded content]

Long shots

"I'm the One" (DJ Khaled ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne)

There's only room for one Justin Bieber-led track on the top of the summer charts and "I'm the One," with its clunker of a chorus, is not it.

Something off the yet-to-be-released "Kaleidoscope" (Coldplay)

Coldplay hasn't been on its A-game since "Viva La Vida" (or "Mylo Xyloto" if we're being generous). And yet "Something Just Like This" is still kicking around the charts, so I suppose it's possible that Chris Martin has a head-banger hidden up his sleeve.

"Wild Thoughts" (DJ Khaled ft. Rihanna and Bryson Tiller)

On "Wild Thoughts," a conspicuously raw guitar undercuts Rihanna's efforts to do for the word "wild" what she did for "work" last year.

[embedded content]

"Bad Liar" (Selena Gomez)

The track has a little too much sizzle and not enough pop to play in the big leagues. Regardless, you ought to check out Gomez's bonkers video, which features the former child star in every role, including that of a mustachioed gym teacher.

Justin Bieber tweets and an international arbitrator listens: court refers defamation claim to arbitration

Introduction
Facts
Decision
Comment

Introduction

Justin Bieber is making news again, but this time it is not because of a hit song or his usual antics. In the recent Quebec Superior Court decision in 9302-7654 Quebec Inc v Bieber (2017 QCCS 1100), the Canadian pop star's lawyers successfully convinced the court that a party promoter's claims of defamation and breach of contract were subject to an arbitration clause entered into between the Canadian promoter and the pop star's US-based agent. The court held that there was a sufficient agency relationship to make any personal claims against Bieber subject to international arbitration pursuant to that agreement.

Facts

Bieber is a Canadian pop artist and one of the most widely followed public figures across almost every major social media platform. Plaintiff Team Productions is an event promoter based in Montreal. Team Productions was in charge of organising a 2015 event at a Montreal beach club that would feature an appearance by Bieber. The event was to celebrate the 18th birthday of celebrity Kylie Jenner.

Team Productions entered into a contract with California booking agency Mr Smith Entertainment Inc to have Bieber appear at the event and promote it on his social media platforms. The contract included an arbitration clause which stated: "Arbitration, all disputes arising under, concerning relating to or touching on this agreement will be submitted to binding arbitration in Los Angeles, California before a single arbitrator for prompt resolution."

A similar, but not identical, contract was reached between Mr Smith and BT Touring LLC – a company acting on behalf of Bieber – for services of Justin Bieber. The choice of law and arbitration clauses were identical to the first agreement.

A dispute concerning the alleged lack of promotion from Team Productions eventually led to Bieber's unilateral cancellation of his appearance. On the morning of the event, Bieber tweeted to his 80 million Twitter followers: "Montreal due to the promoter of today's event breaking his contract and lying I will not be able to attend today's event. I'm sorry". (The Quebec court left it unanswered whether this tweet was the impetus for his subsequent hit song "Sorry".)

Team Productions then filed suit against Bieber personally, claiming the message to be false and defamatory. It claimed:

  • C$650,000 in lost earnings;
  • damage to its reputation; and
  • punitive damages.

Bieber responded by relying on the arbitration clause signed by his agency, Mr Smith.

Decision

Relying on a series of Supreme Court decisions, the Quebec Superior Court first reiterated that the Quebec Civil Code and the Code of Civil Procedure recognise that the court must decline jurisdiction if the parties had agreed to arbitrate the dispute. It also reiterated that where an arbitration clause exists, any challenges to the arbitrator's jurisdiction must initially be referred to the arbitrator, thereby upholding the well-established competence-competence principle. If the application to the court requires a review of evidence, the court has no discretion and shall refer the matter to arbitration. A court will have the exceptional opportunity to consider the applicability of the arbitration clause to the dispute only where:

  • the application concerns only a question of law; or
  • a superficial examination of the documents can answer a factual question.

In this case, the court considered that a minimal amount of factual enquiry was required and therefore it could answer the question of jurisdiction.

The court then considered Team Productions' argument that its lack of a direct contractual relationship with Bieber led to an absence of legal relationship between them as regards the arbitration clause.

The court affirmed that while Bieber did not personally sign the first agreement, Mr Smith was acting as his agent, which therefore created a legal relationship between the parties. The first contract – the purpose of which was to engage the artist – expressly provided that Mr Smith was acting on behalf of Bieber. Bieber then confirmed this agency relationship by signing the second contract with Mr Smith. In addition, this second contract provided that all obligations fell on the artist and Mr Smith could not be held liable for any breaches that may occur. As such, Mr Smith's contract with Team Productions could be relied on by Bieber and the arbitration clause was binding on all parties.

The court then turned to the second question of whether Bieber's tweet and the claim for defamation fell within the scope of the arbitration clause. It held that the clause used broad and inclusive wording, and that arbitration clauses must receive a liberal interpretation under Quebec law, which is consistent with the case law across all Canadian provinces. The court went on to distinguish the present case from other similar cases where defamation lawsuits could not be qualified as originating from a contractual relationship. Although the essence of the claim rested on defamation, in this instance the court found that there was a sufficient connection between the arbitration clause and the tweet as it was linked to the breach of contract and sent on the morning of the event. It also referred to a non-disparagement clause contained in the contract.

On that basis, the court held that Bieber and Team Productions were bound by the arbitration clause signed by Bieber's agency and therefore referred the dispute to arbitration in California.

Comment

Bieber's foray into the Quebec courts on issues of international arbitration law and practice provides another example of Canadian courts' continued deference to, and assistance of, the arbitral process. The case confirms that the competence-competence principle is alive and well in Quebec, as it is in the rest of Canada, and that courts will take a broad view of the scope of arbitration provisions.

Bieber's tale also sets out some of the factors that Canadian courts will consider when deciding whether a sufficient agency relationship exists in order to bind a third party to an arbitration agreement. These include:

  • whether the capacity as agent is sufficiently disclosed;
  • the nature of the agreement;
  • the fulfilment of some of the contract's obligations by the third party; and
  • any subsequent acknowledgement by the third party of the agency relationship.

Drafters of arbitration agreements who seek to bind third parties via an agency relationship – whether for an international pop star or not – should attempt to ensure that the contract containing the arbitration agreement takes these factors into account.

Justin Bieber Proves He's Basically A Pro At Basketball: Watch Him Show Off Insane Moves

Justin Bieber's low-key basketball game rumbled as fans flood to Dublin park for glimpse of the star

Justin Bieber has a reputation for settling in and living like a local when travelling on his Purpose world tour.

The star was caught tucking into the local cuisine of Irn Bru and deep-fried haggis at Blue Lagoon after a gig at Glasgow's SSE Hydro last year.

Now he's been spied getting comfortable in Dublin shooting hoops at the local park.

After flying into Dublin by private jet on Monday night, the popstar ditched his usual glitzy gyms and headed to a South Dublin park to play basketball.

But his trip to the park was far from low key. The star quickly attracted attention from locals who gathered to film the pop prince.

Footage shows Justin sinking some pretty impressive shots with his crew while the crowds cheer him on.

Not everyone was a fan however and some boos can be heard in the clips.

But that didn't bother Justin – footage shows him smirking cheekily before passing the ball to his teammate.

We're sure Justin will receive a much better response tonight when he plays at the RDS Arena stage to a sold out crowd.

The star is playing the Irish arena as part of a handful of European dates this month and throughout July.

Our man recalls meeting Justin Bieber ahead of big Dublin gig

With a distinctive mop of hair framing his face, there was no mistaking the kid. It was, indeed, Justin Bieber, who will perform an outdoor show at the RDS Arena in Dublin tonight.

The previous night I'd watched the young Canadian perform a European showcase in Paris's iconic Eiffel Tower for ecstatic young fans and curious media.

Bieber-mania was starting to sweep the world at this stage. On the way in to the hotel to meet the new teen idol the next morning, I had to battle through an army of young females chanting his name. Later, young Justin would make an appearance on the balcony of his suite, like the Pope in Rome, and the screams of the girls could be heard all around the quaint Parisian streets.

As I waited my turn to interview young Justin that day, I was expecting to meet a brat who would give me a hard time. Instead, the floppy-haired pop pin-up (below) was mannerly and happily engaged in the chat about his life and amazing rise to stardom.

"It feels good, it's definitely something I've worked hard for," Justin said, pointing out that he had begun the dream four years previously.

Bieber's rise to stardom through the internet is a modern-day fairy tale and had been turned into a movie called Never Say Never, which was released a few months later.

"I feel a lot of people will be inspired by it," he told me that day.

"It all started when I entered a local talent competition called Stratford Idol in Ontario when I was 12. I came second and I put my singing videos from the competition on YouTube, so that my friends and family could watch them. It turned out that other people liked them and that's how I got a manager."

A self-taught musician who played the drums, guitar, piano and trumpet, Bieber then found himself at the centre of a tussle between Justin Timberlake and his idol, R&B star Usher, who both wanted to sign him to their respective labels.

"It turned out Usher's deal was way better," Justin told me.

So how was he coping with all the fan-mania that has ensued?

"It doesn't really scare me," he insisted. "I know I have to give up a lot of myself and a lot of my personal life to do this. But it's what I want, so I can't complain even though sometimes I have to force myself to put on a smile when I'm under pressure."

Before we parted, young Bieber gave a flash of his self-worth as the conversation returned to the screaming horde of girls outside.

"I don't mean to be arrogant, but if I walked down the street and I wasn't famous I'd like to think girls would give me a second glance because I'm good-looking," he told me.

Fast-forward 18 months, and I meet Bieber for the second time (above) backstage at The 02 in Dublin, now the 3Arena, in August 2011 before his show.

He's got a sharper hairstyle and has matured in appearance. His fans are now referred to as 'Beliebers' and the excitement he causes has exploded with his growing fame.

The day before we meet there had been mayhem on Dublin's Grafton Street as young women converged on the shopping area causing a crush when word spread through social media that Bieber was out and about on the thoroughfare.

When asked about it, Justin said he wasn't aware of the crush on Grafton Street.

"I wasn't there, I had no clue about it, I was out in the country," he said, referring to the fact that he was staying at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Enniskerry, Co. Wicklow.

His mother, Pattie Mallette, who was just 17 when she had him, was also on the tour. Does she still discipline him? "I mean, she's my mum, it doesn't change once you get famous," Justin responded.

"When I'm being disrespectful or something like that, which doesn't happen very often, she definitely puts me in line."

In the years since, Bieber has struggled to come to terms with life as a mega-star.

Today, with an estimated wealth of 200 million, the 23-year-old is very different to the angel-faced teen I first met in Paris.

Along the way he has earned a bad-boy reputation. In January, 2014, he was arrested in Miami Beach, Florida, on suspicion of driving under the influence and drag racing, reaching 136mph in his rented Lamborghini. He was ultimately charged with driving under the influence, resisting arrest and driving with an expired licence.

In July of that year he faced a misdemeanour vandalism charge for egging his neighbour's home – an incident that resulted in the neighbour taking out a restraining order against him.

As the world began to tire of his antics, Bieber started turning over a new leaf in the last couple of years. Firstly, he sent himself up on the Comedy Central Roast on U.S. TV, in which comedians write and perform close-to-the-bone jokes about the celebrity subject.

Justin later told Ellen DeGeneres: "I think it's just cool to be able to laugh at yourself. I've done some things that might not be the greatest. I just want to kind of own up to some of the things."

He later posted a video online to apologise for his behaviour. He said: "I'm not who I was pretending to be. Often we pretend to be something we're not as a cover-up of what we're truly feeling inside. And just being young and growing up in this business is hard."

Justin, who shares the same manager – Scooter Braun – as Ariana Grande, is said to have found religion in recent years and he delivered a powerful speech at the recent One Love Manchester concert where he also sang his chart-topper Love Yourself.

Ahead of his performance, Justin said: "God is good in the midst of the evil. God is good in the midst of the darkness. He loves you. To the families we love you so much. Put both hands up to honour those people right now."

However, Bieber still whips up a whirlwind when he comes to town – watch out for the storm on Wednesday in Dublin.

Watch: Justin Bieber plays basketball in Dublin park ahead of gig

[unable to retrieve full-text content]

Pop superstar Justin Bieber has been spotted enjoying a game of basketball in Dublin ahead of his RDS Arena gig. The Canadian singer arrived in ...

The six biggest mistakes Justin Bieber ever made

He emerged in 2010 as a squeaky clean pop star, wooing teenage girls with his baby-faced charm and impressing their parents with his sugary sweet image. But these days, Justin Bieber is more likely to land in the papers for getting arrested or offending an entire nation with a badly-judged Instagram post. In fairness to the 23-year-old Canadian, who was just 16 when his first album, My World, catapulted him to international fame, he's been bashed for things most teenage boys get away with — smoking, underage drinking, and the odd hormone-fuelled rant.

At times, he really seems like a decent chap — most recently, he was praised for his involvement in the One Love Manchester concert, which raised over €2 million for the victims of the May 22 bombing, and found him leading the audience in rousing chants to honour the deceased pop fans. On the other hand, some of Bieber's more questionable gaffes reek of spoiled brat syndrome. He's due to take to the stage at Dublin's RDS tonight, and we can only hope that he'll be on his best behaviour! In the meantime, we've been looking back at his most embarrassing blunders to date...

Justin's up to monkey business with animal pal Mally

MONKEY BUSINESS In a move befitting fellow child star Michael Jackson, Bieber acquired a Capuchin monkey named Mally as a pet in 2013, but had to bid the primate farewell when she was confiscated at customs in Germany (monkey ownership is illegal in most parts of the world). Bieber later expressed his regret, saying, "Everyone told me not to bring the monkey. I was like, 'It's gonna be fine, guys!' It was the farthest thing from fine." Mally survived her ordeal with Bieber and is now living happily in a German zoo, but the star's previous pet, a hamster named Pac, wasn't so lucky — it died shortly after Justin offloaded it on a fan outside a concert venue.

GAS MAN Celebs often turn to disguises to help them evade the paparazzi or unwanted fan attention, but Bieber is a little more creative than most. Unfortunately, donning a gas mask twice in the same week in 2012 backfired for the young star when photos of his strange get-up were shared all over the world! Pairing the mask with his trademark look of trucker hat, trainers and low-slung trousers wasn't Bieber's brightest idea, but wearing it to go shopping in London was straight-up idiotic! He hasn't spoken publicly about his odd headgear, which is a smart move as it's rumoured to be the subject of a private joke. Let's face it, there's no smooth way to admit that you find nuclear war funny...

Justin, fans, and his unfortunate former pet hamster

LIFE'S A DRAG Bieber was allegedly planning a late-night drag race with singer friend Khalil in Miami Beach in 2014 when he was pulled over by police and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with an expired license and resisting arrest. After taking the happiest mugshot of all time, he got off rather lightly, escaping with just a €440 fine and mandatory anger management and responsible driving courses. Just two weeks after the case was settled, he was back in the clink again, this time in Canada, where he was arrested for dangerous driving and assault. Is it any wonder 270,000 Americans signed a petition to have him deported from the United States that same year?

FRANKLY SPEAKING Bieber's ego grew to an unmanageable size in 2013, shortly after his 19th birthday, as proven by the note he left in the guestbook at the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam during a visit to the famous attraction. The self-obsessed singer mused, "Anne was a great girl. Hopefully she would have been a Belieber," referring to the name given to his devoted fans. Alright, so he's not a million miles off — the young diarist famously pasted pictures of 1940s pop idols to the walls of the attic where she and her family hid from Nazi persecution — but come on, Biebs, everything isn't about you!

A BAD EGG If you've ever had your house egged by mischievous teens, you'll be pleased to hear that a night of carefree egg-chucking in 2014 cost Bieber a whopping €70,000 when his California neighbour sued him for damages. It's a mere drop in the ocean of the pop star's staggering €200 million net worth, but it's more punishment than he received for spraying graffiti on the wall of a hotel in Rio de Janeiro two months previous. We reckon if he's so keen to vandalise something, he should stick to one of his three multimillion euro homes...

JUST THE TICKET Can you put a price on a celebrity selfie? Well, if the star is Justin Bieber, you'd better have €1,800 in your wallet, as that's the price the singer has charged for post-gig Meet and Greets. Biebs isn't the only pop star to be criticised for such a scheme — Britney Spears, Beyoncé and One Direction have all sold similar backstage packages — but even though Bieber abandoned the practice last year, he's still pushing the limits with his gig tickets. If, for example, you wanted to cough up €1,035.38 for a "VIP experience" in the RDS next week, you'd get some pretty poorly perks in exchange for your cash, namely a pre-show backstage tour, access to a VIP lounge and on-site concierge, early entry to the venue, a goody bag and a "commemorative laminate". Eh, no thanks!
