When It Comes To Documenting Her Love Life On Instagram, Selena Gomez Is All Of Us

This may seem hard to believe, but deep down, Selena Gomez is just like the rest of us.

Forget for a moment that she's a world-famous singer/actress/everything, and that she has famous friends. Look past the fact that her every move is documented and analysed. Just ignore for one second that she's so popular that she has the most followers on Instagram (over 131 million at the time of writing).

Because if you take all of that away, she's just a 25-year-old woman trying to navigate her way in the world like the rest of us. And that includes her romantic pursuits.

Dating is already complicated enough as it is. When you factor in social media - things like when you introduce the person you're seeing onto your grid, and how do you do it - it's a whole other thing. Do you even immortalise someone on your feed if you're not official? So many things to consider!

But Selena has done it ~right~, or plays it very similarly to most of us, at least based on her two most recent relationships with The Weeknd and Justin Bieber (again).

Can you recognise yourself in Selena's social media movements?

She Doesn't Post About Her New Boyfriends Straight Away

Both Selena and The Weeknd had calculated approaches to the way they debuted their relationship on social media. As observants, it was frustrating, but we would probably do the same in the early stages of a new relationship to avoid going OTT in case things don't work out.

Case in point: Selena and The Weeknd became Instagram-official via Selena's blink-and-you'd-miss-it appearance on one of the Weeknd's Stories. She wasn't tagged, and it was a photo of her admiring The Birth of Venus from behind.

Interestingly, The Weeknd's first appearance on Selena's Instagram was fleeting - she uploaded this video of him, but quickly deleted it.

The first proper photo Selena posted of the couple was this selfie from Coachella in April - months into their relationship.

She Strategically Tags Her Boyfriends In Photos

Want to let people know you're dating someone without explicitly posting it on social media? Follow Selena's lead and post a sexy photo of yourself from one of your date nights - and just casually tag him in it.

No caption required.

She Unfollows Her Ex-Boyfriends

If your relationship comes to an end, do as Selena does and purge your ex from your Following list - you don't need to know what they're up to all the time.

You don't have to go as far as The Weeknd did - by deleting every trace of your relationship from your grid - but you can send a sign that you're moving on by unfollowing him. Besides, there shouldn't be too much to remove from your page if you didn't go overboard with the gushy relationship photos in the first place. Be happy that it happened, etc.

But She Still Lurks on Her Exes' Accounts, and Even Leaves Receipts

Selena has found herself in a relatable position: she's ended one relationship and returned to the arms of an ex-boyfriend. It's happened to the best of us, right? (Except our ex-boyfriends weren't Justin Bieber...)

While the paparazzi photos have captured Selena and Justin getting cute on church and brunch dates, her social media tells another story.

There's no evidence on her Instagram grid that Justin is back in her life. She hasn't even re-followed him. But she has been caught out lurking on his page, and even 'liking' a photo of Justin's with his mother, Pattie Mallette.

If she was caught lurking and 'liking' photos on The Weeknd's page, that would be a different issue. But she and Justin know they're good, and don't need to make anything Instagram-official just yet. It's early days (again).
