Justin Bieber and Jonah Hill Prove That Sock Sneakers Are the New Sweatpants

Splash News

No laces, no effort, no problem.

There was a time when wearing sweatpants on your laziest weekend days also doubled as a 202-level style flex. Not everyone was onto the fact that sweatpants didn't have to make you look like a slob; those who adopted the trend early, buying tailored styles from Nike or John Elliott, helped pave the way for what is now, just a few years later, the most ordinary choice in the world. 2017's minimalist sock sneaker trend has that same feel. Just like tailored sweatpants, sock sneakers are high on comfort and easy to slip on, which makes them perfect for lazy weekends, while also making everything you wear them with look more modern. The fact that luxury brands like Balenciaga have co-signed the trend, just as they did with sweats, also helps.

We're not surprised to see Justin Bieber and Jonah Hill both doubling down on sock sneakers before the trend truly permeates the mainstream. Both guys put comfort and grail-flexing high on their list of style priorities. What is slightly surprising, however, is that that they both happened to reach for the same pair of kicks on the same weekend—and they're not even the mind-bogglingly-expensive or sell-out sort of sock sneaker. They're the $320 Gosha Rubchinskiy x adidas Football "ACE 16+ Super" sneakers that came out a couple of months ago and are still available in many stores.

Unlike every guy's favorite classic white tennis sneakers, the knit material on these sneakers hugs the foot tightly and comes up over the ankle like an athletic sock, eliminating the need for a tongue or laces. Thanks to the stripes on the side and the rubber gum outsoles, however, they're still instantly recognizable as Adidas sneakers. If you're looking for a pair of shoes that will feel like a foot blanket and make your basketball shorts, old chinos, and—yes—tailored sweats look cooler, you'd be wise to pick up a pair during the sale-happy holiday season. Or you could always wait until later in the year when everyone else is lining up for them.
