Young Irish girl makes song appeal to Ellen DeGeneres

A young Galway girl has penned a song in honour of her TV heroine Ellen Degeneres and now hopes the queen of US daytime TV will hear the tune and invite her to perform it on her globally successful chat show.

17-year-old Eimear O'Tuathail is such a fan of the anarchic actress turned TV star that she wrote Hey Ellen in her honour and speaking to RTÉ Entertainment the budding performer said, "She's really, really funny and every time I watch her show she never fails to make smile. She brings me a lot of joy. I spent a lot of time on the song and it would be great if she heard it.

"I'd love her to hear the song but the dream is to meet her and perform the song on her show. Then I think I'd cry! Hahaha."

Ellen has occasionally invited musicians who have gone viral on YouTube on to her show and that's what inspired Eimear to write her own ode to Ellen.

This is not the first time Eimear has written a song in tribute to someone who has inspired her.

"There was a girl called Christina Grimmie who was a singer on You Tube but she was shot at a concert last summer," she says. "That upset me so I decided to write a tribute to her which I also put up on You Tube so I suppose the Ellen song is not the first time I've done a tribute song."

Eimear, who has been writing and singing since she was 12, sings quirky and emotional piano songs that recall Regina Spektor ("I get that comparison all the time!" she says, laughing) and she's also a fan of Justin Bieber, Demi Lavato and Tori Kelly.

"I'd love to meet her, I'd love her to see the song but the dream is to meet her and perform the song on her show."

Last year she won singing competition Song for 16 and went forward to the final and sang in the NCH in Dublin. She ended up winning the secondary school category in the contest.

Fingers crossed that Ellen likes Hey Ellen and Eimear's dream comes through but right now the Galway girl is torn between pursuing a career as a songwriter and her plans to study forensic psychology. Of course, some people might say they're one and the same thing.

"I'm hoping to do psychology in college and after I get the degree I'm hoping to do some songwriters as well." Eimear says.

Hey Ellen, we hope you're out there listening . . .
