Justin Bieber's issues got 'worse than people realized,' manager Scooter Braun says

Justin Bieber's memorable run of public incidents and bad behavior got even worse than his fans ever knew behind the scenes.

The pop star's longtime manager, Scooter Braun, opened up about Bieber's struggles and says he refused to give up on the singer, even as others in the industry encouraged him to cut ties.

"It was worse than people realized," Braun told the Wall Street Journal Magazine in a wide-ranging new interview.

"I failed him day after day," he continued. "We were living in hell because he was in such a dark place."

Bieber's issues included a 2014 arrest for driving under the influence, a 2013 video showing him urinating in a janitor's bucket and photo that appeared to show him smoking marijuana, also in 2013, among other incidents.

Braun says the singer began to lose trust in him as a manager and as a friend as his problems continued.

But Braun refused to back down. He stuck by Bieber throughout the drama, and even attended Al-Anon meetings to support the singer.

"When the time came and Justin needed the resources to get back on track, I wanted to make sure I was a rock and someone he could turn to."

Bieber, 23, has reinvented himself in recent years, mostly staying out the headlines for the wrong reasons while churning out hits like "Sorry," "What Do You Mean?" and "Love Yourself."

Amid Bieber's troubles, though, many figures within the entertainment realm suggested Braun move on from the singer.

"Some of the biggest people in the industry, people invested in Justin's career, told me, 'It's over. Focus on something else. That kid is done,' " Braun told WJS. "I made a promise to him when he was 13 that I would never give up on him. I plan on keeping that promise."

Braun is also the manager for numerous other big-name performers, including Kanye West and Ariana Grande.
