Brooklyn school kids get therapy after 'explicit' videos

A forensic child play therapist has been appointed to investigate the exposure to potentially inappropriate visual content and the impact thereof on learners at a Brooklyn primary school.

This follows an incident earlier this month at the Brooklyn Montessori Pre- and Primary school where learners were allegedly exposed to music videos by pop artists including Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Rihanna, Chris Brown and Taylor Swift.

According to a letter from the principal, Estelle Freimond sent to parents, the videos were shown to children by an "extramural person" during an extra class. "The person was not a teacher employed by the school."

She said in the letter that the person started deviating from the school policy, namely that no electronic visual material of any kind may be shown to learners without the prior approval of the principal.

"On discovery of the incident, he was immediately removed from the premises and will not return."

She said the therapist will determine the exact exposure and impact thereof in order to review the event and make an informed decision.

Meanwhile, spokesperson for the Brooklyn police Captain Colette Weilbach confirmed a case has been opened.

"In terms of Act no. 32 of 2007 section 18 one is not allowed to show pornographic materials to minors." She said the case will be investigated to determine the nature of the content shown.
