10 things to do this weekend: September 29-October 1

MANILA -- Here are some of the more interesting shows, events, and gatherings this weekend. 

1. #PurposeExperience 

When: October 1
Where: U.P. Town Center

MCA Music Inc. is bringing its own version of Justin Beiber's Purpose Tour experience in Manila this weekend. 

The music label has prepared a lineup of performances to excite Beliebers, in lieu of the unfortunate cancellation of the Manila leg of Justin Bieber's Purpose tour, which was originally scheduled for this Saturday.

There will be song and dance numbers by Jeremy Glinoga, Indayog, Kyle Echarri, and Company of Ateneo Dancers. 

2. Christian Bautista's album launch 

When: September 29
Where: Music Museum 

Christian Bautista is all set to unveil his new album "Kapit," his seventh under Universal Records. For only P500, fans can get a copy of "Kapit" and watch Christian Bautista and guest performers like The CompanY in this special show.

3. "Siklab ng Sining" exhibit 

When: September 29 
Where: Robinsons Galleria 

Robinsons is once again celebrating Filipino artistry through the "Siklab ng Sining" exhibit. 

In cooperation with The Mandaluyong Artists League and Creative Hands Art Workshop, Robinsons shoppers can marvel at these contemporary art pieces by Filipino artists. 

A special art workshop for kids will also be held at Robinsons Galleria on September 30, October 1 and October 6 at 3:00 p.m. 

4. "Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag" musical

When: September 30
Where: KIA Theater

Edgardo Reyes' award-winning novel "Maynila sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag" has been adapted as a stage musical version by acclaimed director Joel Lamangan. It features music by Von de Guzman, choreography by Douglas Nierras, and production design by Jun Flavier Pablo.

According to Lamangan, the musical will be based strictly on Reyes' novel and not on the acclaimed film by Lino Brocka. 

"Maynila" will have a limited run: September 30 (3 p.m. and 8 p.m.), October 1 (3 p.m. and 8 p.m.), October 4 (8 p.m.), October 5 (8 p.m.), and October 6 (3 p.m. and 8 p.m.).

5. "The Sound of Music" 

When: September 27 to October 22
Where: The Theatre at Solaire

First presented on Broadway in 1959, "The Sound of Music" popularized the hit songs "Do-Re-Mi" and "My Favorite Things." It was also turned into an award-winning movie with Julie Andrews as Maria.

6. Pet Blessing

When: October 1 (3 p.m.)
Where: Eastwood Mall Open Park

Show your love to your pets by bringing them to Eastwood City's 12th Pet Blessing event. All you have to do is bring your pet's vaccination records, two 1x1 colored photos, and register at the Eastwood Mall concierge. 

Pets in costumes will have a chance to bring home exciting prizes. 

7. "The Merry Widow"

When: September 30, October 1
Where: Cultural Center of the Philippines

For its 31st season, Philippine Ballet Theatre is staging "The Merry Widow," starring a powerful cast led nu Irene Kim Abrogena and 2016 World Ballet Competition 4th placer Veronica Atienza who will alternate in the lead role.

8. Al Gatmaitan's "In My Heart"

When: September 29 and 30 
Where: Arts Above, West Ave., Quezon City 

Tenor Al Gatmaitan is holding a two-day concert featuring a carefully selected repertoire and collaborations with the award-winning composer and musical director Jesse Lucas.

Tickets are at P1,000 for VIP and P800 for general admission. They are available at Ticketworld. 

9. "Ang Pag-uusig"

When: September 29-October 22
Where: Tanghalang Huseng Batute, CCP

Directed by Dennis Marasigan, "Ang Pag-uusig," a Filipino translation of "The Crucible" by Arthur Miller, dramatizes how the establishment is used as a tool of the powerful few to prevent any sense of community and collectivity from being formed. 

The witch hunt that occurrs in "Ang Pag-uusig" serves as an allegory, not only to McCarthryism in the US, but also to the current political and social state of the country.

Tickets are at P1,000 and P800 (50% off for students).

10. "Ibong Adarna" 

When: September 29 and 30, October 6, October 13
Where: AFP Theater, SM Manila, SM Southmall

Now on its 8th year with Gantimpala Theater Foundation, "Ibong Adarna" will once again hit the stage. 

Reimagined by playwright Ed Maranan and director Roobak Valle, "Ibong Adarna" narrates the tale of the three brothers, Don Pedro, Don Diego and Don Juan, who are sent by their beloved mother Reyna Valeriana to capture the titular bird, whose magical songs serve as the only cure to Haring Fernando's severe illness.
