Many of pop music's biggest stars with join Ariana Grande in a benefit concert for victims of the May 22 terrorist attack in Manchester, England.
The concert will be held on June 4 at the Emirates Old Trafford Cricket Ground, about 4 miles away from the Manchester Arena where the terrorist attack occurred. Among those who will appear at the concert are Justin Bieber, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Pharrell Williams and British boy-band Take That. The concert will be broadcast on television and radio, as well as streamed online.
Grande previewed plans for a benefit concert in a post to Twitter last week — her first major announcement following the attack that killed 22 people and injured at least 59 more. "I extend my hand and heart and everything I possibly can to give to you and yours, should you want or need help in any way," Grande wrote in the post. Earlier last week, Live Nation announced that the "Dangerous Woman" singer would suspend tour dates through June 5.
Tickets for the concert will go on sale Thursday — prices have not yet been announced. Proceeds from the event will go toward the "We Love Manchester Emergency Fund" set up by the Manchester City Council in partnership with the British Red Cross. Those who attended the concert that was the target of the terrorist attack will have the opportunity to get free tickets to the benefit concert.
Event organizers asked attendees of the benefit concert not to bring bags in an effort to speed up entry. Measures like these also improve security, and experts said they could become more commonplace in the wake of terrorist attacks like these.
To accommodate the concert, the Manchester United soccer team announced that it would reschedule the start of a special match being held in honor of midfielder Michael Carrick's 11 years with the club.
