Several popular concerts in New Zealand recently have been overshadowed by ticket scalping complaints, prompting Consumer NZ to investigate resellers.
The consumer advocacy group says it is joining forces with groups in Australia and the United Kingdom to look into complaints about ticket reselling sites like Viagogo and Ticketmaster Resale.
"We've heard reports of tickets being sold on resale sites in New Zealand for up to 20 times their face value," Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin says.
"Customers also routinely report being stung by steep fees on these sites."
In one case, a woman who uses a wheelchair bought a pair of tickets to one of Adele's Auckland shows from Viagogo for about $1300, only to find they were for seats worth about $200 each up in a stand without wheelchair access.
Consumer NZ is inviting anyone who has bought a ticket through a resale site to complete its survey.
It's particularly interested to hear examples of:
- Exorbitant or inflated ticket prices
- Fake tickets
- Seats not being as described
- Fans being denied access to venues
- Tickets not being delivered
- High fees
- Incorrect credit card charges
- Poor customer service
Consumer NZ says the results will be used to identify problems and find what needs to be done to protect customers.
Pop concert visitors add $37m to Auckland
The scalping inquiry comes as Auckland Council says the major pop concerts by Adele, Justin Bieber, Guns N' Roses, Bruce Springsteen and Coldplay helped bring almost $40 million to the city's economy.
Seven recent concerts by the artists drew in more than 126,000 people from outside the city, research commissioned by the council found.
This was equivalent to 170,420 nights in local accommodation and a $37.7m injection into the economy.
