Five ways Adele showed Justin Bieber how to put on a stadium concert

Two pop powerhouses have played massive sold-out stadium Perth gigs in the past week.

Both marked their first time playing stadium shows in Australia.

BIEBER JUMPS INTO DANCE PARTY WITH PURPOSE

Adele, 28, performed to 65,000 at Domain Stadium last Tuesday while Bieber, 23, took to the stage at nib Stadium last night in front of 25,000.

So who was better?

Without a doubt Adele slayed Justin Bieber in every aspect.

Here's why:

1. Adele wasn't upstaged by her support act

First of all, Adele didn't have one and didn't need one. Even her band and backing singers were almost hidden to allow her to shine in the round for nearly two hours.

Bieber's show had major promise when "the world's best DJ" Martin Garrix had the crowd going wild with an up-tempo, pyrotechnic dance set that ended up being the highlight of the night.

2. Adele wanted to be there

Adele's spontaneous banter connected with the audience and made her feel real despite the magnitude of the show.

She added some fun gimmicks to break up the songs and you just wanted to go and have a "Smirnoff ice" with her after the show and have a laff.

Bieber could seriously be down in the dumps. He could barely crack a smile during his 90-minute set, talked about never wanting to get out of bed and constantly being trampled on.

The closest he got to getting personal with Perth was mentioning how much he hated the heat.

3. Adele didn't look like she had come straight from the gym

OK, Bieber has street cred and Adele appeals to grannies — well that's what the Beliebers would have us believe, anyway.

Still, is it really that cool to perform in adidas tracksuit pants, a wife beater and a variety of sweatshirts straight from your tour merchandise?

Sure, he had run around the Swan River and skated in Leederville after jumping off a long-haul flight the day of his show, but he could have put in some effort.

Adele joked that she wanted to have her "Beauty and the Beast" moment in her sparkling burgundy gown and, while it's not the hottest fashion trend, she at least looked like the star of the show, not an unwashed roadie.

4. Adele didn't have to rely on theatrics

It was just Adele in the round for nearly two hours and she had the biggest Perth concert audience ever eating out of her hand — and in tears at many moments.

She even cancelled the fireworks for Set Fire to the Rain after debris got into her young son's eye during a dress rehearsal.

Meanwhile, Bieber used so many fireworks it was like Skyworks had rescheduled its cancelled Australia Day showcase.

And while everyone loves fireworks, they do not make an engaging concert.

Adele didn't have dancers and Bieber shouldn't have them either. He clearly hates to dance and when he did join in last night it was almost like he was making a mockery of the rock eisteddfod-like choreography.

5. Adele didn't lip synch

Bieber was discovered for his pipes on YouTube in 2007 but it seems these days he uses them only when he feels like it.

There were many times when you didn't even know what his real voice sounded like. Not that he cared; during the likes of What Do You Mean he had the microphone by his side as the vocal track kept playing and he would sporadically join in with the miming.

Even when he did showcase his soulful voice on Love Yourself he sounded rusty, and maybe if he had followed Adele's days of sound checking rather than flying in on the day of the show from the US he might have been in better pitch.

He even lambasted his crew during an acoustic moment for his guitar not being tuned; clearly there wasn't enough time. (When did tickets go on sale? October.)
