Justin Bieber has been ordered to pay a fan's mom, who sued the singer for not meeting her daughter. In August, Melissa Matthai filed a lawsuit against Bieber after he stopped doing meet-and-greets for his "Purpose" tour, and now a judge in Florida has awarded her more than $5,000.
As Gossip Cop reported in March, Bieber canceled his meet-and-greets for the "Purpose" tour, explaining that the encounters left him "mentally and emotionally exhausted to the point of depression," and that he didn't want to go on stage feeling "drained and unhappy." At the time, it was noted that the singer would refund everyone who forked over the high ticket prices for meeting him. And even though Matthai knew the money would eventually be returned for the missed meet-and-greet with her daughter Gabriella at Miami's AmericanAirlines Arena in July, she still sued the pop singer for breach of contract, violating Florida's Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices Act, and negligent misrepresentation.
Matthai noted in her court filing that she paid $1,856.35 for her and her daughter to say hello and pose for a picture with Bieber, as well as have floor seats for concert. The seats themselves cost around $200, while the rest was for the meet-and-greet. It should be noted that while Matthai was awarded $5,298.75 for her lawsuit, it does not necessarily mean the judge agreed with the merits of the case.
What actually happened was Bieber was sued, but didn't even respond to the court papers, let alone have a lawyer show up in court to defend him against the lawsuit. As a result, Matthai was given a default judgement. The more than $3,400 Matthai was awarded above the concert's ticket prices was for legal fees.
Gossip Cop has reached out to Bieber's rep, as well as lawyer Scott Behren, who not only represented the Matthai, but is also her husband.
