A group of Toronto high school students are building skateboards with a purpose.
Students at the Oasis Skateboard Factory, an alternate design school for at-risk youth, have commemorated Justin Bieber's latest visit to Toronto with 13 custom skateboard decks – one for each song on the singer's best-selling Purpose album.
The students designed and built the boards as part of Oasis' mission to integrate learning with real-world experience.
"It's great for these kids to get this professional opportunity," said Craig Morrison, founding teacher of the OSF. "They learn to make 150 per cent of the board, not just 100."
Once the decks were finished, the students sent them to the pop star. He has yet to thank them personally, but Morrison said the school was told the boards were well received and that Bieber plans to display them in his home.
"It was super exciting for some of the girls in the class," Morrison said, "As Beiber fans they were stoked that they could make this happen."
