There's a couple you may have heard of who are engaged to be married. You can tell them apart because she pulls her hair into a bun while he lets his down, and the paparazzi stick to them like bees on poppies. Yes, it's Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin, New York's most photographed couple.
It seems as though in the last two some odd months—since right before the pop star and his model bride-to-be got engaged—a photo series of the two of them has been published every other day. And for that reason, we know what parks they like to make out in (Domino Park in Brooklyn, Rockefeller Park in Battery Park City).
We know where they summer (the Hamptons). We know where they get coffee (Frankel's Delicatessen, Blue Bottle). We know where they like to eat (Cecconi's in Dumbo). We know where they shop (Supreme, Patron of the New).
We know where they work out (Barry's Bootcamp). We know what Bieber does in his free time (Rubik's cubes). We know what gum he's snacking on (Trident, the Minty Sweet Twist flavor).
We know that on Tuesday, he cried on a Citi Bike, and she consoled him. We do not know why he was crying, but it was extremely hot in New York City and emotions everywhere have been running high. We know that elsewhere that day he wasn't wearing a shirt—maybe due to that self-same heat.
Why so many photos? Why so much information about their lives? It's not so atypical for stars, I suppose. Paparazzi can hound a famous person who refuses to submit to having their photo taken, and so a sort of symbiotic truce can be struck (often they're called on the stars behalf). Bieber has historically been accommodating to the paparazzi. There were plenty of pictures of him with Selena Gomez when they briefly re-united earlier this year, and out in New York and the Hamptons last year with his friend Patrick Schwarzenegger. But he seems to be in overdrive here. A series every few days is more than enough to sate the beast, and at this point in his fame he's certainly learned that.
To be sure, Bieber is a very famous Canadian cherub and this is a big moment in his life, which we've been party to for so long. But there are other famous soon-to-be-married-city-dwellers who together constitute nearly as much star-power as he and Baldwin. They are spotted more often than Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra. More than Sophie Turner and the other Jonas. Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson gave Bieber and Baldwin a run for their money for awhile but the photos petered out for whatever reason, whether they were able to strike some deal or they learned how to avoid the photographers or Grande had go promote her new album elsewhere, far away from their new Tribeca apartment and the city's long-lenses.
How long will this near-daily access last? What's it all for? Does it mean an album is coming soon? What is Bieber crying about? Why no shirt? Did he really solve that Rubik's cube? These questions could go on indefinitely. Will the photos go on indefinitely too?
