The singer stood by baggy, boxy, swishy shorts for years and this summer, it's finally paying off.
Justin Bieber has been experimenting with what to put on the bottom half of his body for his entire career, or at least as long as we've been aware of pop star. He's dabbled with overall jorts, sweats worn over denim, and acid-washed jeans. While none of those moves were ones we would (or could, if we wanted to keep our jobs) endorse, not all of his choices have been categorically bad. The guy has been wearing swimwear right for years, and he also deserves some credit for turning ultra-skinny, ultra-ripped jeans into a borderline cultural phenomenon. Also, let's not forget that Justin Bieber got grown men excited about tour merch like preteens at a Taylor Swift concert.
This summer Justin Bieber has triumphed over bottoms again, wearing a potpourri of shorts so on-the-money you can really stop searching for an alternative. We've been evangelizing slim-cut everything for the better part of a decade now, but over the last few years we've warmed to roomier cuts. In suits, t-shirts, and, yes, shorts. Bieber and his BDE, best-summer-ever energy, is pretty much why. While slim-cut shorts look sharp—and always will—there's nothing easygoing or fun about them, nothing that says, "I could jump into a body of water at any moment". Observe his mastery, take notes on what's working here (hint: not his hotel slippers), and get out there in your own pair of swingy bottoms. Summer ain't over yet.
The Fit: Boxy
Ditch your skinny bicycle-fit jorts and you never have to worry about swamp crotch again. Whether the hem of your pair hits above your knee or below, a boxy cut with some room in the thighs is going to keep you looking and feeling cool this summer.
The Fabric: Swishy
Time to donate those denim, chino, and seersucker joints. If your shorts look like they belong on the hardwood or in the ocean, you're doing something right. If your dad would also be drawn to them, you get extra cool points. (From us, not dad.)
The Mood: Confident
Justin Bieber isn't afraid to double down on big. Not only did he put a chunk of a rock on Hailey Baldwin, he's also been wearing shorts so big and bold, you'd think it was 2003. These supersized pairs are admittedly specific to guys with a lot of free time, but not overthinking your style is a look that works for everyone.
